The Story

The Restore Honor Ride is a bicycle ride across the country from California to Washington, DC.

We recognize and honor the hundreds of thousands of patriotic LGBT Veterans who honorably served their country, yet had to hide who they were in order to serve their country.

If you were discharged or forced to resign for being gay, now you have the right to receive the honorable discharge that you were denied, get the benefits that you are entitled to, and re-enlist and serve openly if you choose.

“No longer will our country be denied the service of thousands of patriotic Americans who were forced to leave the military -– regardless of their skills, no matter their bravery or their zeal, no matter their years of exemplary performance -– because they happen to be gay.  No longer will tens of thousands of Americans in uniform be asked to live a lie, or look over their shoulder, in order to serve the country that they love.” President Obama

To all of you who supported the Restore Honor Ride:  THANK YOU!!!!

I completed the ride on Friday, June 23rd, 2017 when I rode into Washington, DC's Arlington National Cemetery.  I'm almost sorry that it's over now, but know that the fight for equality, recognition, and honor is never over.  I will continue to speak about LGBT service members and veterans, and continue to raise awareness to our service.  I will continue working with and for Veterans who were discharged to upgrade those discharges to Honorable.  I will continue to look for resources to help LGBT Veterans.  I will continue to acknowledge and honor LGBT Veterans and their significant others for their sacrifices.  I will continue to offer encouragement and financial assistance to those who need and want to heal the past.

Now that I'm back in Texas, I am preparing for an extended trip around the country in my RV.  I have a lot of things to do before I can take off, but once I do, I will be free to go wherever the wind blows.  I am now a member of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) and the American Legion, and hope to increase awareness of LGBT Veterans within those groups, and make them more welcome.  There is much to do.

I originally promised, way back at the beginning of this youcaring campaign, rewards for different levels of donations.  You probably were not even aware of them.  I want to honor that promise to you.  Donations predominantly fell into 3 categories:  less than $50, $50-$99, $100 or more.  I appreciate every single donation no matter the amount, and I want you to know that they were used judiciously to make the Restore Honor Ride possible.  For those who donated between $50-99, I will have Restore Honor Ride coffee mugs made and mail one to you.  If you gave $100 or more, you can get a T-shirt.  I only need one thing from you.

I don't have your mailing address.  Please send an email to [email protected] with this information:
Your mailing address
Your T-shirt size (if you donated $100 or more)
If you would prefer a mug (if you donated $100 or more)
If you don't want to claim your gift, simply ignore this request.  All of your money will then go toward acknowledging and honoring LGBT Veterans.

Thanks again.  I will never forget your support for the cause and your belief and support in me and the others involved in this endeavor.

Only 3 more days!!!!

I can't believe it!  I've been waking up early every morning for the last 2 months, getting on my bike, and riding between 35-108 miles almost every day, and here I am less than 100 miles from Washington, DC.  It's actually hard to believe that I'm almost done.  What am I going to do with myself when it's over?

First, I'm going to celebrate!  Then I'm going to talk to some Senators and Congressmen and let them know that we are still out there, and we still deserve to be acknowledged.  By "we" I mean the LGBT Veterans.  There are still perhaps 100,000 ex-service members who have less than honorable discharges and are not even considered Veterans.  They get no benefits and no recognition for their service.  I intend to remind our elected officials that this is not over until every one of them receives the honorable discharge that they deserve.

I have appointments so far with Senators Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, Al Franken, and Ted Cruz.  Some of these are "coffees" that they have for their constituents, and some are with senior staff members.  Hopefully I'll get to meet a few in person.  We are still waiting to hear back from several others.

We also just had some media coverage from the Charlottesville Daily Progress.  Check it out at

If you want to watch the completion of the ride on Facebook, make sure that you have sent me a friend request so that we can get connected.  We will be live on Friday the 23rd (3 days) at noon Eastern time.  Join me!

I don't have the official mileage, but if you look at a map it looks like I'm more than halfway to DC!  I'm in Missouri, with only 2 states between me and DC.
Please share the cause with your friends.
