The Story

The Kyle Hyland Foundation for Teen Support, a non-profit Public Benefit 501 (c)(3) corporation, was established on April 27, 2015, by Barbara Gervase and George Hyland as a legacy for Kyle Hyland, their 16 year old son.

Kyle was a sweet, caring young man. He was dearly loved by his family and friends. He was a junior at Benicia High School when he took his life on December 22, 2014.

To honor Kyle, our mission is to establish a teen center in Benicia where kids can be provided support through social interaction, music, art, counseling and mentoring. Benicia is a small town where teens have nowhere to gather and support each other. Teens in trouble have no one to turn to with few school counselors who are over-burdened and ill-prepared to support them. Many teenagers suffer from stress and depression and most go untreated. The stigma of mental illness remains with little to no understanding in the general public. Our goal is to raise awareness and decrease the stigma of mental illness, while providing emotional support to the youth of the City of Benicia.

The Teen Center we envision will be a drop-in center where teens can play music, do art, watch movies, do homework, and play pool, ping pong, etc. In addition counseling and mentoring services will be offered to those teens that need additional support. The Teen Center will be “a safe place for the Teens to fall”, a place where they can spend time with their friends as well as caring adults in the community.

Kyle was a musician, an accomplished keyboardist and guitarist. He had been in various bands since the age of 13 and he loved spending free time playing music with his friends. Music was a big part of his life and so, we will freely offer a place and equipment for teens to express themselves through music.

Kyle was a great listener and would frequently spend time cheering up his friends with his goofy antics. He was a loyal friend who always made time for his friends. He never failed to reach out to the kid that was new to the school, to the foreign exchange student, the kid who had no other friends, the kid with “problems”. Kyle’s life was short but it had great impact.

We need to be able to bring some good from the tragedy of Kyle’s death. He often complained “there is nothing to do in this town!” We think he would be happy with our plans for the Teen Center.

Fundraiser Updates

So much has happened since my last update in July 2015.  Since that time we found a space for the teen center at Gateway Church at 1315 Military West where we were allowed to use the space for a modest facility use fee.  We opened on Jan 22, 2016 and happily ran the center there for a year and a half until being asked to leave in June 2017.  We spent 6 months searching for our next home before being approached by Lighthouse Church who offered to lease their 4bd 2bath house at 1135 Church St.  While the Benicia Teen Center has no religious affiliation, we are grateful to be working with Lighthouse to serve the teens of Benicia.  We moved into the new space in Dec 2017 and spent the next few weeks setting up all the furniture, game tables and audio/video systems and musical instruments.  We now have separate areas for study/art, playing musical instruments, movie watching, video games and game tables.  We also will provide a low cost snack bar in the kitchen as well as offer cooking lessons and other activities.  The huge yard has areas to play basketball, volleyball/badminton, as well as for gardening and relaxing.  The house is perfect for our needs and we are so excited to now be able to offer all of the programs and activities that we had envisioned from the beginning.

We opened again to teens on Jan 8, 2018 and were thrilled to have 16 kids come to once again enjoy the new center; basically continuing right where we left off 6 months ago.  We will have a grand re-opening on Jan 12, 2018 from 3-6pm where both kids and adults will be welcome to check out the new teen center and all it has to offer.

Donations are still eagerly accepted both on this site as well as on our website:  These funds will be used to help cover the rent which is considerably more expensive than the previous space we occupied.

Thank you so much for all you have done to help us create the Benicia Teen Center!

Wow!  What can I say but thank you so much to all of our wonderful supporters who have given so generously to make this Teen Center a reality!  It takes a village to support our kids and this village is amazing.  Kyle is smiling down on you all from above :)

If you haven't already done so, please check out our new website:  We will be using this website to make announcements and keep you updated as to future events.

Thanks again and God bless you all,
