The Kyle Hyland Foundation for Teen Support, a non-profit Public Benefit 501 (c)(3) corporation, was established on April 27, 2015, by Barbara Gervase and George Hyland as a legacy for Kyle Hyland, their 16 year old son.
Kyle was a sweet, caring young man. He was dearly loved by his family and friends. He was a junior at Benicia High School when he took his life on December 22, 2014.
To honor Kyle, our mission is to establish a teen center in Benicia where kids can be provided support through social interaction, music, art, counseling and mentoring. Benicia is a small town where teens have nowhere to gather and support each other. Teens in trouble have no one to turn to with few school counselors who are over-burdened and ill-prepared to support them. Many teenagers suffer from stress and depression and most go untreated. The stigma of mental illness remains with little to no understanding in the general public. Our goal is to raise awareness and decrease the stigma of mental illness, while providing emotional support to the youth of the City of Benicia.
The Teen Center we envision will be a drop-in center where teens can play music, do art, watch movies, do homework, and play pool, ping pong, etc. In addition counseling and mentoring services will be offered to those teens that need additional support. The Teen Center will be “a safe place for the Teens to fall”, a place where they can spend time with their friends as well as caring adults in the community.
Kyle was a musician, an accomplished keyboardist and guitarist. He had been in various bands since the age of 13 and he loved spending free time playing music with his friends. Music was a big part of his life and so, we will freely offer a place and equipment for teens to express themselves through music.
Kyle was a great listener and would frequently spend time cheering up his friends with his goofy antics. He was a loyal friend who always made time for his friends. He never failed to reach out to the kid that was new to the school, to the foreign exchange student, the kid who had no other friends, the kid with “problems”. Kyle’s life was short but it had great impact.
We need to be able to bring some good from the tragedy of Kyle’s death. He often complained “there is nothing to do in this town!” We think he would be happy with our plans for the Teen Center.
