The Story

'The Jasper King Memorial Trust' (JKT) became a registered charity on 30th August 2017.  Charity number: SCO047679

The 'JKT' aims to create outward bound and respite holidays on The Isle of Eigg, for anyone affected by cancer.
The Trustees aim is to help create memories and experiences which build confidence and self esteem at a time when families affected by a diagnosis feel their world is closing in around them.

Jasper was a talented, funny, kind man; a loving husband and family man. He spent his working life touring the world with his company The Chipolatas, bringing street theatre, clowning, and music, to over 44 countries for over 25 years.

Jasper died in 2015 at the age of 44, from lung cancer.

His wife Sharon cared for him during the 3 years of illness and was also diagnosed herself with stage 2a breast cancer in 2013.

The Isle of Eigg was their favourite place, both the landscape and the community, and it's Sharons wish to create a lasting legacy to Jasper and to make a difference to others.

In summer 2017 the charity enabled 2 families to each take a week long break on Eigg. The following quotes are from the families and capture the ethos of the trusts aims perfectly:

“It was great to have the holiday to look forward to as we got through the end of S....

Treatment

I noticed S... and his big brother T... were much closer on our return and playing and

cuddling in the car to the ferry which was really special as it had been difficult for T... when

S... was suddenly so different after his surgery and couldn't move or speak.

The sailing was an incredibly empowering experience and T.... felt so confident and proud

to be helming the boat himself!

S.... was showing great physical improvements when we got home and seemed to really

enjoy the whole trip, the island and meeting lots of people.

It has been a great preparation for starting school this year and I think for all of us after such an intense, isolated year it was great to shake ourselves out of the routines and be somewhere new.”

“Time for deep conversations.

Time to breathe.

Time to be in a very natural environment was amazing for us all.

From the booking this holiday was a wonderful thing to look forward to. A beacon in times of uncertainty.”

Please donate if you can. Upcoming fundraising events include:
A spoof calendar for 2018 featuring some of Jasper friends. Please get in touch by email or our website at www.jasperkingtrust.org to order a calendar.
On Saturday 24th Feb 2018, we are running a fundraising night at Summerhall in Edinburgh. Huge raffle prizes, a music session and more.
Sarahs fabulous 'Pittwiff' natural deodorant will also be available for re-order this coming autumn.

Thanks again for your donation.

All the best to you, Sharon King and the JKT board.

September 10th 2017.

Hello,

We are delighted to announce we are now registered as a charity: SCO0476697

Our aim to send 2 families affected by a cancer diagnosis to the Isle of Eigg in July 2017 was realised with the help of donations and fundraising events.

Both families had a wonderful time on Eigg and enjoyed some fabulous summer weather while on the island. The following quotes from the families really helps sum up their experiences, the benefits gained and the ethos of the trust.

“Time for deep conversations.

Time to breathe.

Time to be in a very natural environment was amazing for us all.

From the booking this holiday was a wonderful thing to look forward to. A beacon in times of uncertainty.”

“It was great to have the holiday to look forward to as we got through the end of Sol's

treatment.

I noticed Sol and his big brother Theo were much closer on our return and playing and

cuddling in the car to the ferry which was really special as it had been difficult for Theo when

Sol was suddenly so different after his surgery and couldn't move or speak.

The sailing was an incredibly empowering experience and Theo felt so confident and proud

to be helming the boat himself!

Sol was showing great physical improvements when we got home and seemed to really

enjoy the whole trip, the island and meeting lots of people.

It has been a great preparation for starting school this year and I think for all of us after such an intense, isolated year it was great to shake ourselves out of the routines and be somewhere new.”

Thanks again for your donations, which have made the above experiences possible.

The trust will continue to fund raise through 2017  and beyond to enable 2 more families to benefit from a holiday on Eigg in July 2018. We are also providing 1 weeks holiday at Harvest Moon in East Lothian in August 2018.

A fundraising spoof calendar featuring some of Jaspers friends is being created and will be ready for order in November.

We are running a fundraising night on 24th of February 2018 at Summerhall in Edinburgh to officially launch the charity. All are welcome.

Sarahs fabulous 'Pittwiff' a natural deodorant, will be back on sale in the autumn. All proceeds to the Trust,

and finally we are in the process of creating a website for the trust. More info to follow soon.

Thanks again, you really have made a difference!

All the best,

Sharon King and the JKT board.

It is now July and we are preparing for our first two families to arrive for their summer holiday on Eigg.
They are booked in for: bike hire, sea kayaking, sailing, archery and guided walks, as well as accommodation.
Really looking forward to their visits and the resulting feedback.
Huge thanks to all our supporters who have fund raised and made donations to the JKT to make this possible for 2017.
In 2018 we aim to add 1 x 3 and 4 day breaks at Harvest Moon in East Lothian in August, as well as 2 x 7 day breaks on Eigg in July.

All the best,

Sharon.

As we approach Jaspers 2nd anniversary, I am pleased and humbled to say, we've now raised just over £3,500.

In a few short months the Trust has grown from an idea to a (nearly) fully fledged charity. Morton and Fraser are drawing up the papers and we expect to be registered by end of May, early June 2017.

Two families are booked into Tigh Eilidh on Eigg during July and the trust are looking forward to feedback on how the holidays go and what we can do to make it better.

Tigh Eilidh has just gone on the market but the 2017 bookings are 'safe'. It would be amazing if we could raise the funds to buy the cottage and run it as a retreat and holiday escape for people who are struggling with cancer.

Big dreams indeed.

Thanks so much for your donation. It really does make a huge difference.

Next up for fundraising is a 'Cultural Cake Bake' sale at Edinburgh College on 11th May.

Love,
Sharon. x
