George Stephens is well known in Alameda, Ca as the "bike guy!" He has worked at Alameda Bicycle for over nine years now and has helped hundreds of families find their dream bikes. He also leads the Family Bike rides for the store every month. Anytime he is out around town biking, walking, or reading a book at the local coffee house, people will stop to talk to him or ask advice about any bike related topics. He is always happy to chat and offer any suggestions to help them out. People only have good things to say about George and what a great person he is.
In 2008, he met Jennifer Levine and they became fast friends. Finally, after years of friendship they became a couple a few years ago. Between the work George does at the bike shop, and Jenn's teaching at Temple Sinai in Oakland, they have worked really hard to get where they are now and build a life together for each other and their kids: Troy, Jeremy, Jacob and Miriam. Sometimes that meant dealing with some difficult things, such as Jennifer's Epilepsy and subsequent brain surgery. Through love and support, they have made it to the other side. Although it's an ongoing condition, they seemed to have stabilized and powered through. Now, unfortunately, they face another health crisis...
George has recently been diagnosed with Stage 3 Lung Cancer that has also also been found in the Lymphatic System. He just started a six week treatment regime of both radiation and chemotherapy. As most of us probably know, this can be very brutal on a physical, mental and financial level. Also, due to previous health issues for George and Jenn's Epilepsy they are unable to drive. So, getting to and from treatment can be a challenge. A wonderful frien to Jenn started a ride sign up site to help with transportation. If you are able to help in this way, please check out thi link:
George has given so much of his time and support to the community, it is our chance now as a community to give back and support George and his family on this difficult journey.
