What is "The Amy Bennett Foundation" ?
We are the very special legacy of a very special lady , an actress, singer, dancer, student, daughter, sister, and FRIEND who left us all too soon. Our two primary legacies are ACTIVISM: as we look to create something positive from the tragedy that took her from us, and SCHOLARSHIP, so that we can continue her beautiful legacy in the Arts.
Our Foundation was instrumental in the passage of Wyoming’s House Bill 0085, “Amy’s Law”, which took effect on July 1st, 2015. It requires drivers of a motor vehicle, when overtaking or passing a bicycle, to maintain at least a 3 foot separation. We feel strongly that had this bill been in effect at the time of Amy’s tragic accident, she would still be with us today. The thousands of signatures on our petition and hundreds of letters to the Senators and Representatives showed the Wyoming Legislature the strength of our organization and the depth of our dedication to this cause. Our sincere hope is that no more lives will be lost due to unnecessary accidents, like Amy’s, and the passage of this bill was a huge step in that direction.
Because Amy was a Thespian and was very involved with the AZ State Thespian Society, the Foundation is offering two scholarships on an annual basis. The first is a $1,500 AZ State Thespian Scholarship (to be awarded in November, 2015 in AZ) and the second is a $3000 International Scholarship split between to two talented, hardworking seniors who will pursue the Arts in college. Our two Inaugural winners, James Conley (VA), and Tarnim Bybee (AZ), pictured center, alongside Julie (Executive Director for EDTA), and Joseph Charles (Foundation Rep) on the Right and Donnie (oversees auditions) on the Left. Additionally, the Foundation is announcing a $5000 Musical Theater Scholarship given to the University of Northern Colorado, (where Amy graduated in 2013 as a Musical Theater Major); funds will be allocated to students in $1000 scholarships over the next 5 years.
In our first year as an organization, we have surprised ourselves at how much good we have already accomplished ! Yet, this is the only the start. We plan to continue our pursuits in bicycle activism on both the state and federal level. Only 25 states currently have a “3 foot Law” law in effect and we are considering which state might be ripe for another campaign. In addition, we are in touch with several national Bicyclist Advocacy groups to make nationwide changes. Our current slate of scholarships will only expand. For instance, we are matching Arizona’s Dynamic Motion Dance Academy’s $500 Amy Bennett Scholarship for a total of $1000 to be given annually. Our inaugural scholarships at UNC have yet to be awarded, and we also looking for other potential partners.
*We need you!*
Our overall fundraising goal for the second year, to continue and expand all the efforts above, is $20,000 in order to continue , and expand, our efforts to protect bicyclists and award deserving youths scholarships in the Arts. All funds raised, will be used directly towards these two charitable activities.
For this fall and winter campaign, we hope to raise the first $5,000 towards this goal by January 2016, and we know with all of your support, we can do it!
As Amy told us often: “You only get to live once so LIVE IT!” - ! Now we can spread her infectious love and spirit through this institution. Whether you were fortunate enough to meet her or be affected by her beautiful spirit or not, know that you #LiveLifeHere, too, by making a donation, however small, into the beautiful Legacy we continue in her name.
At a time of year when we say thank you to our friends and family for being in our lives, and we treasure our family even more than usual, know that your donation is about part of becoming an even bigger family, one that pays forward Love through positive acts of advocacy and artistic expression.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to The Amy Bennett Foundation today!
