The Story

My mortgage lender is so dishonest that my only hope of keeping my home is to refinance or get a reverse mortgage. Meanwhile, I must keep paying legal bills of $165 a month. A refinance means that my home has to pass inspection.  Please help me get the home repairs finished, so I can keep my home. And help me keep making those payments to the lawyers. I'm hanging on, but just barely. My family  helps when they can, but they are not wealthy.

Please understand that I live quite simply. I don't eat out. The last movie that I saw in the theatre was The Hobbit Part One, and my brother bought the tickets; I haven't seen Part Two. I have seen a few local stage plays because I get free tickets in return for my honest reviews, and a friend drives me to the theatre. I don't have a car. My clothes are hand-me-downs and a few things from yard sales and thrift shops. I get most of my food from the local food bank. I do home maintenance and repairs myself whenever I am able to do the job. I sell my homemade jam to friends and family for pocket money. I hold yard sales whenever the weather permits, and I do have a lot of stuff that people  have given me or abandoned here over the years. Most of my yard sale items must be cleaned and/or repaired, so I clean them and repair them. I'm getting pretty good at fixing a variety of things, like picture frames that need glue or staples, clothing that needs a little stitching, and so forth. I also write books, and that is my main source of income. Sadly, the royalties have fallen below $100 a month.

I have 8 books available on Amazon, and I'm almost ready to publish another book. Two of my books have been translated and published in Italy, and a third book is gathering some interest in France. The sales would increase if I were able to travel to conventions and conferences to promote my books, but I can't afford to travel. Last year friends and family took me to two conferences at local universities, one at UC Irvine and the other at Cal State Fullerton. I was unable to attend a recent convention at UC Berkeley for a variety of reasons, mostly economic. As it is, my promotion activities are pretty much limited to the Internet.

My house is falling apart. The shower will soon be repaired, thanks to your help, so now the kitchen needs attention. I've had three experts look at it, two handymen and one contractor. They all agree that the cupboard and countertop unit must be replaced, and that the outside wall of the house needs to come out, as well. It has damage from carpenter ants, which are like termites on steroids. The infestation is gone, so no further damage will occur, but the repairs must be done soon. They will be costly. I'm counting on your help.
