What began as a wish for a boy who had HLHS to meet his "girlfriend" Ellen Degeneres, has turned into something bigger than all of us. Because of Ellen, her team, his amazingly talented medical team at Primary Children's Hospital, The Ronald McDonald House, and some genuinely kind people throughout the world, Tayt Andersen received a heart transplant in June 2015. He has had the time of his life being able to run with his friends, attend school, be an annoying brother, a constant presence in his family, and keep in touch with his beautiful girlfriend Ellen.
It's been so rewarding to see Tayt be a "normal boy" (Tayt's words).
We thought his main struggles were over. Sadly, they are not. In December, he contracted the CMV Virus. To "normal" children, with healthy immune systems, CMV is hardly a blip on their screen. But to Tayt, it is devastating and can be deadly. This last month he has been very ill, and after an emergency visit to Primary Children's, it was determined that he is at Humoral Rejection Status. In other words, his body is now rejecting the beautiful heart he received from a selfless donor who paid with precious life for Tayt's gift. Because of this virus, Tayt's other organs are now in danger too.
As of this writing (April 17, 2017), Tayt has been readmitted to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City Utah for an indeterminate time. His medical team will start with a heart cath and biopsy, and then work to proceed from there. It feels like the hearts have been ripped out of our chests too.
His struggle is far from over. Tayt's mom in particular is having a hard time coping.
This is devastating emotionally, mentally, and physically to all of us. To Tayt's immediate family, it is financially insurmountable as well. We literally do not know how we are going to do this again financially. Tayt's mom has sacrificed her career, livelihood, and income potential to take care of her amazing son. She is the SuperHero of moms. All of us have made significant financial sacrifices, to the point where, we don't know where this one is going to come from.
We need your help. Please help us help Tayt to "just keep swimming."
Your compassionate donation will literally help Tayt fight this. Donations go directly into a Trust for Tayt, and can only is used to pay for medical expenses, medication, travel, and immediate needs for Tayt and his family. If Tayt doesn't receive critical financial help, the medical help will not happen.
Your help means so much to us. It is what helps him keep swimming.
Thank you all for loving Tayt. What a joy he has been in all our lives.
