The Story

You can follow updates on Tara-Leigh Cobble's (aka "TLC") open heart surgery and recovery here or by clicking "follow" on TLC's Facebook profile

As many of you know, TLC, D-Group Founder + Leader, was born with a few major heart defects (more info listed below). A team of cardiac specialists has determined that she needs to undergo a series of heart surgeries to repair (or possibly replace) her aortic valve and repair some of the other major issues.

TLC will be having her 2nd Open Heart Surgery on Thursday, Dec 8 at 7:30am (central time). Her first Open Heart Surgery was on Thursday, September 29). The surgery will be at Heart Hospital Baylor Plano, and she'll be in the hospital for ~5 days, then recovering for approximately 4-6 weeks afterward. Her sister Sonya will be flying in from Greeneville, TN, to be with her during her stay in the hospital.

The doctors estimate the overall cost to be in the range of $500,000. Fortunately, TLC does have insurance, but it does not cover the entire cost of the surgeries, nor the vast expenses associated with these surgeries, the preliminary testing, rehab/recovery, and follow-up testing. We're aiming to raise 10% of the costs, hoping that will cover the bulk of what she will personally encounter.

If you know TLC, you know she believes every detail matters. So even if you can give $1 to help her with these expenses, it matters. And even if you're not led to give but are called to pray for her and her family during this time, it matters. Thank you for being a part of what God is doing in and through her life!

POST-OP DAY 5 UPDATE (TLC here): Today has been the best day so far, praise The Lord. They let me sleep through my 3:30am chest x-ray (an event that occurs every morning), and instead gave me a 5:30am tube x-ray (I think that's what it's called, but who can say? It was 5:30am!).

We made more progress on walking and dressing myself, and I got to show off my superpower of taking off my socks (nay, my compression socks!) with my toes. Which is important since I can't reach down for 6 weeks. I also graduated from yellow socks to the coveted seafoam socks! I'm officially a "Low Fall Risk"!!

Today was also Spa Day at the 622. Mainly because tomorrow is Sonya Cobble Higgs's birthday, and I wanted to let her know how much I love her, and how grateful I am that she is sacrificing her time and energy to stay with me around-the-clock and do my a thousand favors per hour. So we did face masks and kiwi eyes, and my friend Joy volunteered to come in to give us both massages!!! The nurses flocked to our room after that! Ha!

The doctors say I *should be* released tomorrow, but it has to be cleared by my surgeons first, so I hope they visit early (but not like, 3:30am x-ray early). I still have 20-ish pounds of post-op fluid, so they're still restricting my beverage intake to drought-level (1/4 my usual intake, so if you know me, you know that's the absolute worst). But I've dropped 6 pounds of fluid already, praise God! 🙌

We had a lot of wonderful visitors and sweet gifts today! Thanks to some girls from D-Group, some pastors from The Village Church for loving me well!

And many thanks to all of you, who have put us almost halfway to our goal!! Thank you, and praise God!!

Days 3 & 4 Post-Op:
(Sonya Cobble Higgs asking forgiveness for being too tired to post yesterday)

Tara-Leigh is gaining significant ground in her healing progress. She had her chest wires removed (which she said felt like the technician was pulling barbed wire out of her heart 💔), she's getting more laps around the walkway in the hall, she's been removed from all IV drips, and has more energy each day.

We would like to ask you to pray specifically that she will quickly drop the extra fluid she is retaining from this process. They won't discharge her until it is nearly all gone, because there is risk for heart failure if it remains.

The Lord has been faithful in providing us many caregivers that are believers. We have been blown away by their encouragement, kindness, and stories of their walk. Our D-Group sisters have been incredible by serving us meals and many various offers of help. And thanks to all of you, we're nearly halfway to our funding goal! 🙌

Thank you for calling/texting/messaging and for caring for us in any way. We are so grateful!

Sonya Cobble Higgs sharing from Day 1 Post-Op

Today has been a good day overall because Tara-Leigh has been able to be removed from several "wires", was able to eat 3 small meals and by the end of the day she was able to walk around the hallway (with our Dad following and asking her if she felt good enough to walk to El Paso! 😜)

Her pain has not been as significant from her surgery site as it has been from her back. She says that being flat on her back for more than 8 hours is unbearable. She wanted me to ask you all to help us pray for back pain relief. Would you do that for us? 💙

We are hopeful that she will get more tubes and encumbering attachments removed tomorrow.
