Among the smiling faces you’ll find in Waynesville’s shops, Tammy Carmona is a national celebrity of sorts, touching thousands of lives nationwide every month. Her genuine smile and cheery countenance are especially bright. A deeper look reveals an incredible and unique strength of character and wisdom born out of difficult circumstances. Tammy is living with stage IV metastatic breast cancer, a disease that takes many lives annually. For Tammy, her diagnosis has brought her a new family of friends, a personal journey of health, and a deep understanding of our health system and supporting organizations.
Finding a lump in her breast in February of 2013 at age 39, Tammy began a new chapter in her life and has documented her journey in a blog at www.tammycarmona.com. Reaching over 60000 readers, she offers support to those on a similar journey. In March, her blog was recognized as one of 2015 Best Metastatic Cancer Blogs by Healthline.
As a result of her chemotherapy, Tammy, like others, now lives with Type I diabetes that surfaced last year. With her sugar levels suddenly out of control, she spent a good part of her vacation in the hospital. This year Tammy took her health into her own hands and has been successful in maintaining appropriate blood sugar levels through diet, reducing the need for both insulin and pain medication.
Most recently, Tammy has been diagnosed with cancer cells in her ovaries and brain. She has endured painful radiation, chemotherapy and surgery but Tammy is a strong spirit, full of life. Since Tammy can no longer work and her disability insurance was cancelled, her family has tremendous living expenses and medical bills. We also hope Javiee can stop working for a while to spend time with Tammy and her son, T.J., so we set up this online donation website.
