The Story

Our eyes were opened by a photograph that few could look away from.

They opened to see an escalating crisis, where almost 12 million people have been uprooted from their homes in Syria, 4 million now in other countries looking for a safe place to live, work, and raise their children.

We are a group of concerned Canadians sponsoring a Syrian refugee family's resettlement in Canada. We want to extend the security and comfort we enjoy daily here in Toronto to those who, for five years and longer, have suffered war, desperation, and oppression.

As a sponsoring group we are responsible for providing for the family's needs for their first year here, after which they will have the tools and resources necessary to be self-sustainable. These needs include rent for a suitable apartment, food, clothing, transportation, and medical bills. We will also assist them directly with enrolling the children in school, seeking medical care, learning English, finding work, and adjusting to life in Canada.

You can help by donating towards the costs of living for this crucial first year. Lifeline Syria estimates a family of four will need $27,000 for one year to cover all costs. With your help, we've surpassed this initial goal. The extra funds will allow us to possibly sponsor a larger family, a family with higher needs, or to help the family pay back the costs of their initial travel to Canada.

We have now been matched with a refugee family currently awaiting a permanent home. They are a family of five including three young boys. When they arrive in Canada, we will meet them at the airport and for the next year we are their guides to Toronto and life in Canada.

More details on the sponsorship process are available from Lifeline Syria.

The halfway mark! As we pass the 6-month mark we wanted to share a quick update with our donors. The family is settling in well — the kids started school almost immediately and are learning English incredibly quickly. The parents began ESL courses in January as well, and are also learning more and more every week. We've had an amazing time getting to know them, and helping them get to know their new city (even if they did think the laneways of Kensington Market look like Lebanon!). We all continue to be incredibly grateful for your support.

The family arrived! They flew in yesterday, and this evening we were able to meet them and bring them to their apartment, fully furnished with all the stuff you've given us. They were exhausted but the kids woke right up when they saw their play area full of toys and games! The year ahead will be an adventure for all of us, but tonight is just about a family getting a good night's sleep in their own beds. Thank you so so much for making that happen.

We've been assigned a family! We don't know yet how soon they'll be here, but we are now ready to collect household items for a family of five, with three boys aged 4, 6, and 8. We're looking for winter coats and boots, a double bed frame and three twin bed frames, and everything else a family needs, like a table and 5 or 6 chairs, a set of 6 plates, cups, cutlery, etc., rugs, nightstands, bookshelves, everything. If you have items to donate, please contact any one of us (or email [email protected]) and we'll arrange collection.
