My name is Sylvia Lynn Hogge. I am an Uber driver and have been for over 2 years. On November 3rd at 10:02pm est I picked up a passenger by the name of Travis * (last name acquired November 6th). Once I dropped them off I headed back to where I was to continue working. On my way to my next pick up I heard the phone in my third row. I stopped at the address of my next pickup and immediately retrieved it from my third row. I saw it said Lost Phone with a call button under with words for a young lady named omit for safety. I used the button to call * and Travis answered. He was polite at first but when I informed him that I would get in touch with him first thing in the morning due to my being out working and heading to the oceanfront he became angry and told me he was tracking the phone and would follow where I was taking his phone and that he would show up when I wasn’t expecting it. So we hung up and I turned his phone off because I was scared about him showing up where ever I go as it was a danger to my passengers. I took a picture of his phone and sent it to Uber. Around 230am I get a call from my ex. He is asking me why there is a guy on his front step yelling about a phone. Travis used my license plate to track down that address because that address has nothing to do with me as I have never been to that address. It is the address where my car was registered and it wasn’t registered to that address till less than a month ago. I don’t even know the address. I do not know all that happened at this point but I received a phone call from an officer who told me if I did not meet with Travis immediately that there would be a warrant for my arrest later that day. I agreed to meet him in a Walmart parking lot at 330am because the officer bullied me into it and I was scared for the charges. I kept trying to tell him the Uber policy but he refused to listen and kept cutting me off by saying “but the law is”. He told me if I did not agree to meeting Travis I would be labeled as refusing to return his phone. After I got off the phone with the officer I called my ex who told me that Travis was drunk and was being hostile towards him. I decided at that point that it was not safe for me to meet him alone in a parking lot and took the phone to the police station. I immediately reported this to Uber in two separate chats. They acknowledged that they received my information and passed it along to the passenger. I continued working at that point then went home to sleep. I received a phone call at 730 am from the police officer. I missed the call because I was sleeping. I received another call at 10am but I missed that one as well because I was sleeping. I had gotten home at 5am because I was scared to go home earlier. He found my ex’s address, what was stopping him from finding mine. The detective left a voicemail stating that he was calling about the cell phone and was going to put a warrant out for me. I immediately messaged Uber to inform them of this and called my local police station to find that by the time I woke up I had a warrant out for my arrest for a felony of grand larceny. I called a federal officer I know and he said I needed to turn myself in right then and there. I made arrangements for my children, spent 3 hours on the phone with Uber (to come up with zero help from them) and finally turned myself in between 9pm and 930pm. I was released between 11pm and 1130pm. I was never in cuffs, I was never placed in a room. I was allowed my phone for most of everything happening because I posed no threat. The magistrate was bewildered at why this charged had been passed through. My preliminary is November 20th and I will need a lawyer by then.
