THE NEED: Su Casa Catholic Worker Community provides transitional housing for homeless families. As we plan for the future, we face a practical challenge that we are ready to meet, with your help. Our historic building is contaminated with lead paint, inside and out. We need your help to make our home a safe place for all.
WHO WE ARE: Located in the Back-of-the-Yards neighborhood of Chicago, Su Casa provides hospitality for up to six families in our 22-room former Franciscan Friary. Many of the families living with us have experienced domestic violence. Su Casa serves as a step in the healing process. Families can stay up to one year rent-free, while receiving case management, legal and social advocacy, counseling, education in life skills, tutoring, parenting and household establishment classes, and preparation for independent living. In the tradition of the Catholic Worker, guests participate in community life, living with volunteer “workers.” Everyone helps out with cleaning and cooking as if they were in their own home. Guests and workers build community together; sharing meals, celebrating birthdays, and going on outings together.
Our doors remain open, but due to the presence of lead, our hospitality currently has limitations. Lead poses too great a health risk for us to accept expectant mothers and children under five so we must currently turn these families away.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: Our professional lead abatement costs have been estimated at $60,000. Can you help us? Can you also pass on this request to others who may have financial resources to share? While we rely on your monetary donations for this work to proceed, your prayers are also much-needed, that we may find strength and peace throughout this critical time.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!
