The Story

The Stockton Animal  Shelter has made incredible improvements in the type of care that animals receive when coming to the Shelter.  In 2012, over 11,020 animals came into the Shelter and only 32% left the Shelter alive.  In 2014, 11,324 animals came into the Shelter and 75% left alive.  This is an incredible improvement to be accomplished in such a short period of time.  One of the reasons there has been such a vast improvement in care is because there are now two full-time veterinarians and a full medical support team on-site.  A very large percentage of the animals coming into the Shelter are severely sick and injured.  Currently, when injured animals that need X-rays come into the Shelter, the medical staff have to make an appointment with an off-site veterinarian facility.  If the off-site veterinarian facility is using their X-ray equipment the Stockton Animal Services medical staff have to wait or re-schedule, sometimes days later.  With an on-site radiography machine, X-rays can be taken immediately and the animals can be diagnosed  and receive the appropriate treatment immediately. This care and treatment will be one of the ways to continue the positive outcomes for animals entering the Stockton Animal Shelter.

"Cuzko" pictured above, formerly known as "Peanut" is just one example of how X-rays are vital to save the lives of animals at the Stockton Animal Shelter.  "Cuzko" was found by the Vasquez family in February of 2015 but they were unable to afford the medical expenses associated with his broken ulna. They brought him to the Shelter on February 27, 2015 hoping that the Stockton Animal Shelter would be able to treat him. They also expressed an interest in adopting him if possible. The Stockton Animal Shelter sent "Peanut" to an off-site veterinarian clinic for x-rays and he was determined to have a fracture of his distal left radius and ulna, this is a very common injury in small dog breeds. The Stockton Animal Shelter then contacted U.C. Davis Veterinarian School to see if they would be able to do the surgery and repair the fracture, which they did. "Cuzko" then went back to the Vasquez family.  His human brother was recovering from a broken leg, so they recovered together.  "Cuzko" was adopted by the Vasquez family on March 11, 2015 and has recovered fully.

Hello,

We are happy to report that we raised the needed funds to purchase the Stockton Animal Shelter an X-ray machine.  We are beyond proud to see our community and beyond come together to support our cause.  The Shelter staff works tirelessly day after day, dealing with sick and injured animals.  There have been many great improvements made at the Shelter over the last 3 years.  Now that the Shelter will have an on-site X-ray machine, they will be able to further improve on those efforts by being able to diagnose and treat sick and injured animals more efficiently, without undue stress on the animals.

We can not thank everyone enough for their generosity to help the homeless and abandoned animals of Stockton and San Joaquin County.  Together We Can All Make A Difference and every one who donated to this worthwhile cause has proven that.

Thank you from the Animal Protection League Board.

We hope the new year has been treating you well.  Yesterday, the Stockton Animal Shelter posted their end of the year recap.  With our help they managed to reach an 82% Live Release Rate, it is astounding that just 3 years ago, the Live Release was 32%  The Animal Protection League was a critical a piece to that success.  Our dedicated volunteers who spend day after day helping at the Shelter doing laundry, walking dogs and helping potential adopters look for their pet or find a new pet to adopt.  And we don't want to forget those volunteers who spend their weekends adopting animals at the off-site events.

We are less than 6,000 dollars away from our goal of raising 75,000 dollars to purchase the Shelter an X-ray machine.  Having an onsite radiograph machine will help the Shelter provide better treatment plans for the hundreds of sick and injured animals that arrive at the Shelter every year.

Remember, you can donate online or you can send in your tax deductible donation to the Animal Protection League at P.O. Box 61912 Stockton, CA 95269-1912
