The Story

Our mentor, friend and long term Los Padres Hotshot is loosing his 9 year battle with cancer.  Stan was moved into a hospice facility today.  Stan's health insurance pays for the doctor's care but not the facilities.  Stan's wife, Allison and their 14 year old son Shane have accumulated an overwhelming amount of medical bills.  Our main goal with this fundraiser is to help Allison and Shane with these bills.

Stan has been a mentor and father figure for 30 plus years of Los Padres Hotshots.  Stan aka Bone aka Bonehead aka Milton is a true man's man.  One of his signature sayings (he likes to repeat himself) is "when men were men" referring to his generation.  Stan is a true legend in the wildland fire community.  Most people in wildland fire have heard of Stan Stewart.  If you have ever worked on a Hotshot crew, you've probably heard of Stan.  Stan dedicated his life to training firefighters and striving to improve the safety of the boots on the ground, all boots on the ground, not just his crew.  Stan is the current President of the United States Hotshot Association.

Please join our efforts to help Allison and Shane during Stan's last few days with us.  If you can't donate, please free to send a card, a story or a joke to Stan Stewart, he loves to laugh!  Stan is now at the Serenity House 930 Miramonte Drive, Santa Barbara, CA. 93109.

For those of you who know Stanley, we are trying to capture any pictures and stories of Stan.  Please share any stories and pictures via email to: [email protected]

Happy New Year!  For those of you who missed out on Stanley's Celebration of Life last month, please come join us this Saturday, January 6, 2018.  Island Brewing Co. in Carpinteria has agreed to let us host a fundraiser to help support Allison and Shane.  Santa Barbara County Firefighters will be cooking up tri-tip sandwiches, Island Brewing Co. will be donating proceeds from their local beer, there will be live music and we'll be auctioning off some pretty cool items.

Lunch will start serving at 2:00 p.m. and we will start the raffle and auction around 5:00 p.m.  We will be there all day, come show your support even if you can't stay long.

Island Brewing Co. 5049 6th Street Carpinteria, CA. 93013

If you have any items, services etc. that you'd like to offer up for auction and/or raffle, please email or call/text me at [email protected] or 805-746-7073.  If you'd like to help in other ways and cannot attend this weekend let me know and I'll steer you in the right direction.

The Celebration of Life last month was an awesome party for Bone!  It was well attended in spite of the Thomas Fire.  It was great to introduce Stan's blood family to his fire family.  I had hoped to take lots of pictures to share with you all on here however; that didn't happen.  Thank you all again for your continued love and support for Stan and his family!

I have received some great pictures of Stan over the past 6 days. Ryan Weber (LPHS 97-99) sent me this one a few days ago. When I opened it, I laughed and thought “what a classic picture”. For some reason, I kept opening it back up throughout the day and night looking at it. I think this picture really shows what a true leader Stan was. We all tell our guys every fire season to be a “student of fire” and Stan was truly that. Stan surrounded himself with greatness. His best friends are some of the best Superintendents ever and if you don’t know Allison, she is the sweetest most gorgeous person inside and out! Stan wanted to do everything well. Stan didn’t care what other people thought. He was always reading, learning, improving himself and those around him. He was a smart man. He set the example. He “raised” a lot of us and taught most of us.

There will be a celebration of life held for Stan in December. Allison is working out the details and soon as she figures things out, we will let all of you know what the plan is.

I have set up a Meal Train for Allison and Shane. So many of you have asked how else you can help; here is way!!

Please forward this to anyone you think would want to help.  The last thing Allison needs to worry about right now is what to make for dinner. I ask that we allow Shane and Allison the space to grieve. Obviously, we all want to be there right now, but we don't want to overwhelm the family while they sort out their greatest needs. However, please don't be afraid to offer anything you can think of, be it dog walking, gardening, picking up dog poop, housekeeping, etc., and I'll make sure the message gets to Allison.

It's hard to ask for help when so much is happening at once, as friends we can offer what's needed without any fuss.

Want to help but don't live in the area? No problem! Email or text me at [email protected] or 805-746-7073 and I'll give you a list of delivery restaurants near the house. Don't cook? No problem, just stop at Vons on the way and pick up a roasted chicken and a salad, drop it in the cooler with a note and you're done! Dinner isn't the only option either. Please feel free to drop off muffins or banana bread for a breakfast treat! Feel free to contact me if you would have any questions!

Please continue to help show this amazing family how much love and support they have!
