Be The Change Yoga & Wellness (BTC) and Spirit of Youth Yoga (SoYY) were meant-to-be when they first connected in 2015, two years into BTC’s development and months into SoYY’s. Their directors, Taraneh Sarrafzadeh and Pam Lozoff had already known each other as teenage youth, and now discovered a shared passion for driving change in their community through yoga & mindfulness. They found deep encouragement and support by joining forces as their friendship blossomed into a business partnership...
Together, the BTC and SoYY communities are made up of change-makers, movers, shakers, and caretakers. We are yogis, educators, students, youth, youth allies, service providers, parents, healers, activists, community organizers, artists, creatives, and humans.
We are investors in the well-being of all in our community.
We are deepening our investment in this community by forming a collective, Be The Change Collective, as a hub for social change. In addition to our donation-based studio programs, the collective aims to extend the reach of yoga and healing practices in our community through our: youth and young adult programs (with Spirit of Youth Yoga), street outreach programs (reaching vulnerable individuals & communities in San Jose), and Conscious San Jose (CSJ festival & community-centered wellness events).
Additionally, the BTC collective aims to serve in bringing more glue to community health, healing & arts resources present in San Jose. It Takes A Village! Let’s deepen how we work together as a collection of individuals & orgs (you all) that embody compassionate living and changemakin’ spirit in San Jose.
This winter, our focus is on investing in our youth through our Woke Teens and Facilitator in Training (FIT) program, where youth transform within to transform our communities. We're raising funds for our five-day long, 16-hour yoga & arts in-action immersion in which they ultimately become trained, paid facilitators with our youth programs, developing their healthy self expression, mindful leadership skills and work experience. Our Winter Camp will be based at Seven Trees Community Center in the Eastside of San Jose. We're offering camp free of charge to make these tools accessible to all young people in our community. A tax-deductible donation of just $46 funds one day of camp for one young person, $230 funds their whole week!
Additionally, this Winter Campaign is raising money to support our in-school community yoga classes, which serve those closest to our youth--staff, parents, and families--supporting our vision of well-being for all. SoYY has programs at Voices Charter School & Lincoln High School. Your contributions will also support our yoga & wellness program development for transition aged youth (TAY) as well.
Will you invest in our community with us?
It’s not just about giving dollars (although if you can contribute, your dollars may be matched by the Gates Foundation on #GivingTuesday), it’s also about sharing the abundance and diversity of RESOURCES we have.
Come to our first All Hands Meetingon Saturday, December 2nd, 5:30PM at Local Color (and/or upcoming seasonal meetings) to learn more about how you can become involved.
All our love,
Spirit of Youth Yoga & Be the Change
