Unfortunately, when you live in the deep south where it's hot and mosquitos rule the night we always have an abundance of heartworm positive dogs that come into our shelter. We usually try to limit the number we have, but this summer has been a brutal one for us and for the dogs we've saved.
As of today we have 25 dogs that are heartworm positive. The cost of getting each dog through the grueling heartworm treatment process isn't a cheap one. In fact, it costs us a little more than $500 to get a dog back on the road to a healthy life after being diagnosed with heartworms.
And this isn't just a Florida problem. Ten of the dogs we brought back from our Texas trip tested positive and the shelter manager from where we took them said that about 90% of the dogs they get into their shelter test positive.
Protecting your dog from heartworms is simple. You make an appointment at your vet's office for a heartworm text. If they test negative you can buy a pill that costs on average $7/month to make sure they stay negative. Most vets aks you to get a yearly heartworm test for your dog when you bring them in for their yearly vaccines. The test costs just $25 at the SPCA of Brevard Vet Clinic and is about the same at other vet offices.
Most of the time we wouldn't ask for help paying for heartworm treatments, but Hurricane Irma closed our two Thrift Stores and Full Service Vet Clinic for almost a week and that was money that wasn't coming in to help with the medical expenses of the animals at our shelter. We rely on those incomes to run our adoption center and unfortunately a week of being closed has hit us hard.
We're going to feature this fundraiser for the next month as our Five for Friday Fundraiser. We ask that our followers donate just $5 towards our heartworm positive dogs so they may receive the treatment we not only promised them, but the treatment they deserve!
