The Story

UPDATE: This was our first crowd-funding campaign, it has been a very new experience for the team and we set ourselves a modest target.  For all of you who have had the intention to donate but have not been able to please continue to donate. We have some amazing plans for the space and any extra funding we can raise will be invested to create a bolder and more beautiful Hubb.

The Hubb was a pioneering arts centre located on the border of Sparkbrook and Balsall Heath, in the heart of multicultural Birmingham. Over the course of three years, the Hubb hosted artists, academics and community activists from around the world and more importantly, it provided an intimate space for local communities to come together and be inspired by the transformational power of art and culture.

Soul City Arts in partnership with ISRA-Feed The Poor, a local charity focussing on humanitarian aid,  created the original Hubb to ensure there was a social and cultural space that could benefit the community. It closed its doors in the summer of 2013 as a result of the City Council triggering a compulsory purchase order on the building, as part of their wider regeneration strategy for the surrounding area.

The Soul City Arts team, led by Artistic Director Mohammed Ali, has continued to work diligently behind the scenes to identify a space to relocate the Hubb. Whilst a number of opportunities presented themselves, the organisation remained committed to identifying a space that would ensure the Hubb could remain in the local community.

That ambition has now been realised with a space identified only a short walk away from the old Hubb. We now need your support to transform a run-down space to breathe new energy and life into, and transform it into our new home. The new Hubb will continue to provide an intimate space for creative workshops, performances, events and exhibitions. Once established, Soul City Arts will work with funding agencies to ensure the new Hubb can help transform the lives of the local and wider community to address the issues that are important to them and serve as a catalyst to inspire and lead change.

To realise our ambitions and to create a sustainable long-term future, we need your support to help us cover the costs of refurbishing the space. Without your support, there will be no Hubb. To begin with we are looking for £5,000 to support our Phase I of development, which involves mainly renovating the space, such as the following:

·         New flooring and lighting

·         Repairing walls and ceilings

·         Correcting pipework and electrics

·         Plastering and painting

With your help and support, our main room can become functional to help us continue like before. The new space has not been used for over 15 years, so needs a lot of attention before it is ready. The initial £5,000 we raise will mean we can launch the main space and begin workshops and activities.

We will look at beginning Phase II of the development once the initial work has been carried out.  As work commences over the coming weeks, we will be sharing photos and videos of the development of the space.  If you wish to volunteer at Soul City Arts, please get in touch with either Mohammed directly or via our Facebook or Twitter pages.

Fundraiser Updates

Dear Supporter,

We wanted to update our supporters with progress at the new Hubb as we have been busy since the start of the new year! Firstly we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated as part of our crowdfunding campaign, raising a fantastic £11,341 exceeding our original target! The money came from a number of individuals, as well as  attendees of the Birmingham Soup event, and local businesses including Latif's, Hush Bedrooms, La Favorita Restaurant and Kaleidoscope Imaging.

Our new space is located in a semi-basement space within the Bordesley Centre, otherwise known as the Muath Trust in Stratford Road, Sparkbrook, a historic building which was formerly a King Edwards grammar school.  We are delighted with our location as it sits close to the city-centre as well as being at the edge of Sparkbrook and Balsall Heath.

So far we have been busy putting in new flooring, re-plastering the walls, carrying out electrical work including some beautiful LED uplighting, and many other works to get the space ready for the public.   The good news is we are now in the final phase of work before the space can open, but as can sometimes happens with building projects, we have had a few surprises along the way which have slowed things down!

Rest assured we are working hard to make the space ready, and will be in touch with details of our launch in the very near future.

In the meantime Soul City Arts has continued working in the community, developing various projects, but some of that news will be shared in the next update. Stay tuned!

We thank you for your belief in the power of the arts to affect real, positive social impact!
