The Story

Our SOS Team is so touched by the outpouring of support both from our community here in Sonoma County and from kind-hearted people all around the country. The power of human kindness and community that is rising up amidst these ashes is the silver lining that can give us all hope. As we're assessing the needs here on the ground and the skills/resources our team has to offer our community we've decided that people need us to channel more of our available energy into providing free counseling services. Grief is palpable in the smoky air here. So many people have lost everything, including loved ones and pets. It can be hard to focus on emotional/mental well being when still in the midst of such a crisis. None-the-less, we realize that our counseling skills are more needed in this community now than ever!

All money donated to this point will still be used for the mission of buying needed supplies and delivering them to evacuee centers. Any money donated after midnight tonight (10/13/2017) will begin going towards a fund for us to provide free counseling to families who have lost the lives they once knew to these fires. Thank you again for doing your part to help us help our community at this tragic time. Someone posted signs in Santa Rosa that read: "The Love in the Air is Thicker than the Smoke". We believe that is true, and your kindness is evidence of that.

It's been  7 weeks since the fires.  Life for some in Sonoma County is back to some level of "normal" but for many thousands of residents here in the County, it will be a long road ahead before it's anything close to "normal."  The effects of the Fire Storm are impacting everyone in this County and even beyond in many visible and invisible ways.

At SOS our phones have been ringing with calls from those seeking support after the trauma of the fires.  We've hired two new clinicians to help SOS meet the need for affordable and accessible mental health services.  We are feeling the pain in our community and can see it's going to be a long road ahead.

We will continue to seek donations following the fires for the foreseeable future.

Please consider donating to SOS and sharing this link with your friends.  All proceeds go 100% to free counseling sessions to those affected by the fires.  As usual SOS continues to provide low-fee counseling to all who need it regardless of ability to pay.

Mental Health is essential to the strength of our communities.  Mental health treatment is a human need, especially in this day and age of fast paced lives and the increasing visibility into the violence, natural disasters, and conflict around the world.  On this Giving Tuesday, please consider donating to SOS Community Counseling, where clients can access quality, private therapy, at a rate they can afford.

Wishing you the best in this Holiday Season!

SOS Community Counseling is a Non-Profit Mental Health Agency that trains Therapist Interns and Trainees, and provides free counseling to individuals, youth and families, through three Community Clinics, as well as through five High Schools, and in collaboration with Law Enforcement doing Juvenile Diversion and Crisis Response in Sonoma County.

Our Doors are Open!  We are able to take on new clients who are in need of support following the Fire Storm Disaster in our  Community.  Our Therapists receive high levels of supervision and training, including a focus on trauma-informed therapy.

In order to sustain the level of support needed in the coming weeks, months, perhaps years for Mental Health Counseling following this disaster, we are seeking donations that will go 100% to cover the bare minimum cost of therapy.  Please donate to support Free Mental Health Counseling to those who would not be able to access it elsewhere due to limited funds, transportation, or insurance limitations, and who have been affected by the Fires.

$60 covers our bare minimum cost of 1 session with a Therapist Intern, $480 covers 8 sessions of crisis debriefing counseling and skills building for one client.  $3,120 covers 1 session per week for a year, which is why we are shooting high!   Every little bit adds up, and every share helps us meet our goal!

Thank you for all you do, and for supporting SOS Community Counseling!
