The Story

Sophi is a spunky, smart, and vibrant 7 year old. On February 10, 2016 she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. This is an aggressive cancer, but we are treating it aggressively. She has finished 6 rounds of chemotherapy and endured a nine hour tumor resection under the care and skill of the best neuroblastoma surgeon in America, Dr. La Quaglia. She will now travel back and forth to New York to receive cutting edge immunotherapy at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Over the next 5 months she and her caregivers will make 7 more trips from Kansas City. This will be hard emotionally, physically, and financially.

One of our joys in the midst of this struggle was the arrival of her new baby brother in August 2016. This gives the family so much joy, yet adds a level of challenge to care for a baby, a 4 year old, and a child battling cancer, while both parents are striving to maintain full time jobs.

We have been truly blessed by the love, prayers, and the positive energy we receive daily. Now we ask for a different level of support. Sophi is doing her part, now her loving community has an opportunity to do their part financially. Please contribute and be a part of Team Sophistrong.

Hello Community-

We have had an amazing few months off with Sophi, but there have been some bumps in the road as well. We posted a few weeks ago about Sophi's baby brother Des who caught a nasty combination of viruses and ended up intubated and in the ICU for 5 days. He has made a full recovery and we are so grateful for the energy and love sent our way during that trying time.

April brings us to the next step in Sophi's ongoing treatment. She will fly to New York and home 3 times during the month of April to start a series of vaccine shots. The reality of 3 trips to NY in one month, as well as the unexpected time we had to take with Desmond this month has left us with financial anxiety- to say the least. When we thought we had a plan life threw us a curveball. If you are able to help, please consider our family.

In the spirit of transparency, here is a breakdown of our travel expenses for the next year and we will use a 5 day trip as an example.

Work missed- Zac has the ability to work remotely but cannot work every day as he is also primary care giver for Sophi. This will average out to $600 out of a paycheck each trip.

Food- Dinners are mostly provided at the Ronald McDonald House, but they average $40 a day for the 2 of them for other food and snacks. So, that averages out to $200 a trip

Transportation- Cab rides to and from the airport, the hospital when weather is bad- $200 a trip

Lodging- The Ronald McDonald House charges $35 a night. $175 a trip

Entertainment- Let's be honest, she needs to have a little fun while she's out there if she's feeling good. We budget $100 a trip

Per trip we average $1,275 out of pocket. We have 8 trips this year. $10,200 out of pocket NOT including insurance deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums which doubles that amount.

Anything you can contribute helps. We are a middle class family of 5 with good jobs, but this stretches us pretty thin.

February 1st, one year ago we heard the word cancer and nothing has been the same since. This year has been unimaginable. And Sophi has been the one leading all of us in courage, strength and grace. This week she is enjoying being a short-haired, feisty first grader, celebrating the 100th day of school. But the best part of her day is coming home to baby brother Desmond. They are smitten with each other!

Medically, Sophi is now in the vaccine phase of treatment, which requires a trip to NYC every month for 11 months. The vaccine is a clinical trial and only available at Memorial Sloan Kettering. We are so grateful for the research they are doing and the treatment she is receiving.

The ongoing costs are still staggering with out of pocket costs, medical and travel related. We are extremely grateful for the generosity of this community and thank you in advance for your ongoing response.

Ok community. As we have a clearer picture of what the next phase of treatment requires, it is clear that the financial need is great. Over the next 5 months, Sophi will need to travel to New York 7-8 times.

The success of this fundraising campaign is when two things happen. First is when you contribute. Second is when you share this post, ask your friends to share, and spread the word of this beautiful fighter.

Zac, Bethany, Sophi, Jude, and soon to be Baby Des thank you for your love and support.
