The Story

As part of our ActionQuest, Seamester, GoBeyond and Lifeworks family,  it's likely that you've been welcomed by our friends at Soper's Hole on Frenchman's Cay, Tortola.

On the 6th September, 2017 Irma made landfall on the BVI as a Category 5 hurricane.  The eye passed just north of Soper's Hole and produced devastating westerly winds of over 200mph.   While Irma has gone, the scars she left are deep. The BVI has been heavily damaged and every day more heartbreaking photos of the places we love surface. The good news is that injury and loss of life is minimal, but so many of our extended BVI family have lost everything.

Many of our past staff and student alumni have reached out to ask how best to help. With basic needs of food, shelter and water starting to be met, we want to focus our efforts on the local community of Soper’s Hole and, in particular, those small business’ that have lost everything. Soper’s Hole has been our home in the BVI since 1987 and this area has sustained huge damage, so we’ve set up this  fund where 100% of the donations will go directly to those people hit hardest. Our goal is to help get their livelihoods rebuilt. Without them the vibrant, friendly waterfront community of Frenchman’s Cay would be nothing.

Soper’s Hole is starting to get back on its feet again and although this donation page doesn’t reflect it, we’ve already made our first donation of $2000 to Omar Hurst at D’Best Cup / Omar’s Café.

Omar had a big job ahead of him to clear the debris that had piled up in front of his property so that he could reopen.  He then had to back-fill behind the seawall and top with gravel.  City water remains an issue in West End, so he installed a freestanding tank on top of our storeroom to provide the water he needed to cook and clean.  We are thrilled that with your help Omar is up and running!

While one or two other places along the shoreline are also back in business many of the smaller wooden stores like Latitude 18, Zenaida of West End and Blue Water Divers were totally destroyed. Mike and Travis will be heading back to the BVI at some point in the next couple of weeks to sort out some of the AQ gear but also make some decisions about how best to put your generous donations to work within their community.

Many thanks to everyone who helped facilitate a fast start to recovery.  Your willingness to assist financially will be something that our friends will not likely forget.  We’ve long held the view that like you, this community is part of our family, and your generosity has been overwhelming.

Having met (and exceeded) our goal we are going to close the fundraiser on the 25th of October, so if anyone else would like to donate after this time please feel free to contact us in the office by phone or email.  +1.941.924.6789 or [email protected]
