Sonco Wasi (House of Heart) is a small non-profit organization led and coordinated directly by its original founders. Our goal is to continue providing social support for children that have been physically and economically disadvantaged by the flooding of a small town in the Sacred Valley, Taray.
We aid development through art, music, painting, games, yoga, and language learning. For the children of Taray, their world is only that of the village in which they live. It is our goal to extend the scope of these children’s minds, and show them that the horizon extends much further than that of their daily lives and that they are capable of growing and achieving beyond their wildest dreams.
Our kids come from very difficult backgrounds and face many hardships. This limits them from experiencing special occasions the way many of us do. Before we started working in Taray, the children did not know who Santa Claus was or get the chance to celebrate Christmas. Most children do not celebrate birthdays or any other special holidays.
This is why it is so important to us to make their Christmas the best it can be, every year. This is more than just a party. For these kids, it is a symbol of hope, and a reminder that they are loved, cared for, and important.
The party acts both as a Christmas and birthday party for everyone. It is the one big event these children get, and the most exciting thing to happen to them all year. The guests are made up of the children and their families, meaning we usually host about 200 people. A majority of the proceeds raised will go directly to gifts for the children, and the rest will go to entertainment, much needed food, and equipment. Any additional funds raised (beyond our goal) will go directly to improving the quality of life of the children through educational materials .
