The Story

SoCal Pitbull TEAM has been working hand-in hand with many local rescuers and fosters to relieve some of the over-crowded conditions at the El Centro Animal Shelter, not far outside of San Diego.  This shelter doesn't have the type of funding many SD-based organizations do. As a community-funded shelter dependent on donations they can scrape together from surrounding Imperial Valley areas, they are in desperate need of our help. The median income per capita in Imperial County is just $16,667 according to recent census data, with a whopping 22% unemployment rate.  When the human residents are suffering, so to do the animals.

The new Shelter Director is fighting an uphill battle, one we want to help him win for the sake of the animals we love.  He is steadfast in his position that El Centro remain a no-kill shelter.  However, this has led to overcrowded conditions that we want YOUR help to alleviate.

SoCal Pitbull TEAM has put together a team of volunteers and contractors willing to work at reduced or NO COST to repair the sub-floor of the ancillary building seen in the video.  This will allow us to replace old flea-infested carpeting with a new, hygienic linoleum floor. We will also be building NEW KENNELS once the floor is complete, which will maximize the available space, and no longer require dogs to be kept in temporary carriers stacked two high or shared with multiple dogs.

This is not the final solution for El Centro, but it is a start.  More people need to know about this underserved shelter, seek to adopt from them, and volunteer there to give baths, walk dogs, and spread HOPE not only to the animals there but to the shelter workers who face these conditions every day and have not been given the resources to improve them.  It is time for that to change.

Why El Centro Shelter?

* It is one of the most underfunded shelters in all of Southern California.

* The new shelter director is committed to it remaining a NO-KILL shelter.

*The shelter does not breed discriminate, and the more dogs of ALL kinds we can help will free up space for the pit bulls that do enter the shelter system to find safe haven.

We need to raise $8,500 to cover the costs of raw materials, permits, and expert contractors to repair the sub-floor of the ancillary building, install new floor covering, and install all-new kennels.  Any remaining funds will go to the Humane Society of Imperial Valley-El Centro for veterinary expenses.

Your donations will be processed directly through SoCal Pitbull TEAM to ensure they are used for EXACTLY the purposes described herein.

On Sunday March 19th we OFFICIALLY ACHIEVED OUR GOAL, raising almost $2500 in proceeds for the El Centro Shelter Project.  Thanks to your online donations and donations from merchandise sales etc. at our recent events, we will be able to break ground this Spring as planned!  Our goal was $8500 and with the additional donations and sales from this weekend, we are right on target!

SCPBT cannot express the amount of gratitude for the outpouring of support for this project.  Any remaining balance over and above what we spend on this project in Imperial County will of course, go to the dogs!  Stay up to date on Facebook for photos, videos, and updates on progress as we start this major renovation to the ancillary building and make a big impact on the health and well being of so many dogs!

We've raised over 5K for much needed upgrades to the no-kill El Centro Animal Shelter ancillary building but need your help to raise just a little under 3K more to have the minimum needed to break ground. The 8K we need is ONLY for supplies, many of which we have found from local vendors AT COST and most of the labor is donated. It takes a village!  If you have already donated THANK YOU and please SHARE SHARE SHARE!  We need to get construction started before the heat of summer sets in, making conditions difficult for our volunteers and miserable for the animals we are there to help!
