The Story

My name is Terrie Harrell and I have started this fundraiser in order to help my son and daughter in law raise the money needed to help their son and my grandson Skylar get the chemo treatments and medicines to beat this dreaded thing called Stage 3 Burkitt Lymphoma.

For those of you who don't know his story, Skylar is an energetic 8 year old who will be 9 in just 14 days. He loves his dogs, his little sister and brother. He has never been sick other than a cold.  He is thoughtful, polite, and a friend to everyone he meets.  His eyes are filled with flicker of light and his smile lights up the whole room.
He is just one little boy to this big world but to all of us,his family,he is OUR world.

Burkitt Lymphoma is a fast agressive form of non Hodgkin's lymphoma starting in the lymph node and traveling throughout the body faster than lightening.  With Skylar it started out as a small lump on the inside of his left groin area on Oct.15   That weekend found him in the ER with pain.  After CT scans, labs, pet scans, and numerous other tests on Nov 7th he was to be admitted for outpatient surgery to remove the mass and within a short time we were told our little boy has cancer.  Burkett Lymphoma.

He was admitted to Norton's Children's Hospital in Louisville where after another Ct and PET Scan we learned it had spread to two other areas in his groin and one in his chest.  Skylar has had spinal taps with chemo and a port inserted in his chest. He has had several chemo treatments and was sent home to continue with oral medications before going back to continue with the second round of chemo in 16 days for 7 days straight.  This will be the schedule for the next 6 months.

Burkitt Lymphoma has an 85 To 95 percent cure rate.  We are told his prognosis is good since it was caught before it spread further.

His life has physical and emotionally changed in a few short weeks. He has been a real scout in all of this saying "I've got this." Meaning he will beat this and we are positively believing that.

We appreciate all the support he has received through your generous donations, prayers, cards and well wishes.
Thank you to each one.

Today is International Childhood Cancer Day!  Please keep Skylar and all cancer fighters in prayer.  Help us support Skylar whenever and however you are able.

Skylar is doing better than we expected with all the chemo treatments and medicines he requires to help fight this awful thing called Burkitt Lymphoma.  He has an amazing positive spirit and bright outlook.  He still has some major obstacles ahead and will have another petscan soon.  We are hopeful for a positive outcome.  Thank you to everyone for your thoughts, comments, prayers and your financial contributions.  It is so appreciated.

Great news!  Skylar was released from the hospital Tuesday January 24!   He was so excited to be going home finally.  He will have to return periodically as an outpatient for maintenance checkups and meds.  The good news is he is in remission and that is going to continue   We are very hopeful   So proud of our grandson Skylar.  He has endured the worse possible event for a child to endure and has come through it with grace.  Please continue to pray this terrible thing called Burkitt Lymphoma is gone.  Thank you for your continued support.

January 20, 2017 marked the end of Skylar's chemo.  He celebrated with a hospital sponsored party where he had his favorite food....Pizza!  Followed with a mine craft cake in the shape of his favorite game.
Although this treatment is finished Skylar has months and years ahead of him for follow up pet scans and lab work with maintenance treatments planned for outpatient.  He would love to be able to stay home and he is already looking forward to returning to school, but until that happens Skylar is managing to stay on task with a tutor and hospital and home schooling.
Skylar is truly our Superhero and is counting down the days until his last treatment on Wednesday.
Thank you for following Skylar's story and progress and know how much your prayers and support mean to this little guy!
