The Story

My name is Shonia Nayar Atchu and I'm a Malaysian student, currently pursuing my studies in the field of Dentistry (BDS). I have successfully gained admission into the 4th best dental school in the world, King's College London. In fact, I have actually just completed my first year of dental school in King's now. All requirements with regards to academia and extra co-curricular activities were met and all seems perfect and fitting thus far, however, financial hardships are proving to be a hindrance for the next 4 years.

I have applied to the Khazanah, Astro, Maxis, Shell, The Star Education Fund, YTL Corporations and Genting scholarships in Malaysia but have not been successful. I've also applied to many other foundations but unfortunately have not been getting many replies or positive responses and it's incredibly disheartening. It's been a constant hunt for funds for the past 2 years. However, luckily enough I did manage to attain a contribution of £10K so far. I'm so extremely grateful for this generous contribution and it has definitely relieved some of the burden off of my family and I. This is why I have set the goal of my fundraiser as £27K instead of £37K, which is my 2nd year dental school tuition fees.

I do believe the lack of aid available is due to the tremendously high tuition fee costs for Dentistry as an international student in the UK and its unique course. Hence, I start this crowdfund in hopes that the people around me are able to lend a helping hand. It would be with the heaviest of heart if I had to terminate my studies at this prestigious university due to financial ability after all my efforts.

In my first year of Dentistry, I worked part-time almost the entire academic year to help my parents out by paying for some of my own living expenses. I also tried my best to continue to contact more foundations/corporations and applied for more available scholarships from Malaysia. I actually managed to get through to one of the last few stages of the Yayasan Khazanah scholarship but was still unsuccessful by the end of it. To be completely honest, it was one of the most challenging years of my life balancing between my studies, a completely new environment and finding funds for my education. Currently, I do still have a part-time job to help with my day to day expenses.

I also understand that many people would have the perspective that it is not necessary to study overseas and that studying locally is completely fine seeing as I don't have the funds for studying abroad. However, I do know that all my life I have worked hard in whatever I did, I give my all to achieve the best of my abilities, I strive to always do better in life and I find that dreams should not be given up for any reason and especially not due to financial hardships. It is certainly not easy for me to reach out to the public to help me out, but it is something that I need to do for my future and I deeply hope that you can help me achieve my ambition. It is also important to note that even if you are not able to aid me financially, spreading and sharing this crowdfund will already be a massive help.

I would be truly grateful.

I am very fortunate as my parents were able to fund my first year of dental school in King's and I’m very appreciative of that. Nonetheless, the truth holds, that is my family will not be able to fund my education without any external help for the next 4 years.

I intend to overcome this financial hurdle one year at a time. Thus, even if about 250 people helped me out with an estimate amount of RM570 (£108) per person, the following year of my course can already be funded. Although I did set a rough amount of contribution, I would be grateful for any generous amount. I am still constantly going to try applying to as many foundations/corporations I can find in the meantime.

If you do intend to make a contribution, please note that it is an option for you to remain anonymous. Additionally, please do drop me a message in private should you want to just loan your contribution to me. I am more than willing to repay your help once I have started working in the future.

PS:

For those of you who finds the payment process complicated, I am writing a short guide to help you through it:

1. Pls key in your phone number without the country code(i.e without +60 if you're where I'm from in Malaysia)

2. Transactions may 'not complete' if you are not a PayPal account holder. I would strongly encourage you to sign up under the pay with credit card section(and ticking save details of card with PayPal)
