The Story

My name is Sheri Diaz.  I am 46, live in Spring, Texas, and have been working as a Medical Assistant for the past 3 years.  I recently got the shock of my life with the diagnosis of cervical cancer.  I went in for a routine pap smear and the results indicated that something wasn't right.  About two weeks later, I went in and had a biopsy done and all three samples came back as having cancer cells in them.  At first I felt devastated; my whole life seemed to be turning upside down.  But I had to get it together and figure out my insurance and how I was going to be able to pay for treatment.  I found out my insurance is preventative care only, and would not cover any of the treatment for cancer.  I am in the process of adding a supplementary insurance plan, but I will still be paying out of pocket for the additional premium as well as a percentage of the treatment.  I have scheduled my first appointment with the oncology gynecologist.  The doctors want me to have a total hysterectomy as soon as possible, so it is imperative that I raise the money quickly.  I won't know until after the surgery what further treatment will be needed.
I have my husband’s full support as I go through this struggle, but all of my other family live out of state so I don't really have family to go to appointments with me.  My husband and I both work, but our income is limited. The money will help with transportation to and from medical appointments, medical treatment such as surgery, and medications, as well as living expenses because I will be out of work for a month or longer.  Any help you can give is much appreciated.

On 7/26/17 I went to my oncologist and he checked the incisions since surgery and said every thing was healing well. He believes they were able to get all the cancer out. I have one more appointment for a vaginal exam to make sure everything is okay. If everything looks good at that visit just check ups once every 3 months for one year. Looks like I am cancer free again. Thanks for all your help. Many bills are still coming in from all the procedures and of course I have all my regular bills to pay. I was able to go back to work part time on 7-27-17 and hope to due full time work starting 8/7/17. I am not on any medicine now for the cancer I finished everything the doctor prescribed.

My surgery for my total hysterectomy took place Friday July 7th at about 4:30 pm they wheeled me into surgery. The procedure took about three and a half hours. I was in my hospital room about 9 pm that night. I was only aloud liquids for about 2 hours. Then they finally brought me a sandwich and fruit and soda. The surgeon said the procedure went well. I was unable to sleep at the hospital because I was on my back and I was not used to sleeping on my back. I was also in pain and some of the pain medicine didn't work. I got out of bed for the first time about 4 am. Then the catheter was taken out at 6:30 am and breakfast was at 7:15 am. I was able eat okay. But was in pain after breakfast. I waited about two hours and had my first walk and restroom break. My sister was able to be at the hospital with me and a couple visitors came by the room. I took pain medications throughout the day. I was discharged about 5 pm. I was sent home with injection blood clot medication and pain pills. I was told no driving and no lifting until follow up in two weeks. Also I will be home 4 to 5 weeks with no pay from work. Money will be very tight because I had to pay 300 dollars co-pay for surgery and 50 dollars for medication so far this month alone. Any assistance with medical bills, transportation fees or living expenses would be appreciated.

My surgery for my cancer is scheduled for Friday July 7th,2017 at 2 pm. I will be at Memorial Hermann Main Hospital downtown Houston, Texas. The co-pay just for the surgeon was $150 and not sure yet what the hospital co-pay will be. I will be in the hospital at least one night. Surgery itself is supposed to take 4 to 5 hours before I get to my hospital room in about 6 1/2 hours after surgery at the hospital. I was told no driving for a week and out of work up to 5 weeks. I won't have any income during this time so any donations will help a lot. Thank you in advance. Please help if you can.
