The Story

On Saturday May 5th the Sherburne County 4-H Camp was struck by arson.

Affectionately know as the "white building", which dates back to FDR's" New Deal, has been the heart of camp since it was moved on to the site.  For nearly 50 years, the White Building has served thousands of youth from several area counties.  The White Building housed one of our 2 dormitories, as well as a main programming area, and our kitchen.  The building is a total loss, there is simply nothing salvageable.

The loss is simply devastating.

The timing couldn't be worse either, with the first camp of the season scheduled to arrive on June 10th.  Our hope is to get camp functional for this season's camps, which will be no small task.  All of camps power was routed through the White Building, with means there is currently no lights, and no water.  Then there's the kitchen.  From the commercial oven, to the refrigerators, all of our stainless steel prep surfaces, right down to the trays campers used for their lunch - it's all gone.

All the tables and chairs...beds and mattresses...all the recreation equipment - so many things we've been building and adding throughout the years.  It's all gone.

We are working with our insurance company, but as we all know insurance rarely covers everything that we'll need.  We truly appreciate any amount that you are able to offer, and when the time comes we'll be looking to those who want to lend a helping hand.  If the funds raised go beyond replacing the White Building, it will be used to continue to create an even better camp experience for all who attend!

Failure is simply not an option, we cannot and will not let one individual destroy the memories created during summer camp!

Fundraiser Updates

Exciting news today!  We got an update from our insurance company today, and the numbers were as good as they could be with our policy - we're feeling very optimistic.  As expected though, we're still going to come up short of where we need to be in the long run.

It is however the start we needed, and the answer to knowing how much we truly need to raise.  With insurance, and what savings we have it looks like that number will be around $50,000.

The next steps for us include demolition, which should take place within the next couple weeks, and getting bids for a new building.  We're likely looking at some sort of pole shed structure, similar to our Red Dorm.  We'll be reaching out to local lumber yards and contractors for estimates; our goal is to break ground still this year, and for camp to be open for the 2019 season.

Clearly, we're still going to need your help, please keep sharing the fundraiser, any companies or organizations who are interested in contributing, please feel free to contact us as well!

We can't say enough - THANK YOU so much to everyone who has already offered donations and support, we could not do it without you!

First, a huge THANK YOU to everyone that has offered donations, suggestions, and volunteered to get a little dirty when the time comes.

I keep saying that "when the time comes", and keep hoping it's sooner rather that later...but right now were still in a holding pattern.

We are however going to go on with our regularly scheduled "Camp Clean Up Day".  Beginning at 1p this Sunday May 20th, we'll host a "Town Hall" meeting to discuss the future, gather input, and probably share a story or three.

Afterwards, we'll work on cleaning up the vandalism in the Red Dorm, some upkeep to the grounds, and buttoning up things as we begin the process of rebuilding.  At this time, we are not able to do anything with the White building, we'll let people know if that changes between now and then.

Thank you again for all of your support!
