FANTASTIC NEWS Update as of this afternoon on Shari's progress;
Mom just got out of surgery and the doctor informed us that it went really well. Her internal organs and intestines look good, no swelling or bleeding. She kept her blood pressure at a good level throughout the entire surgery even with the binder around her pelvis removed. THEY CLOSED HER! The incision from her chest to below her belly button is closed and the healing can begin.
Over the next few days they are going to assess her ability to essentially overpower the ventilator and breathe on her own. There have been signs over the past few days that she is taking breaths outside of the programmed settings of the ventilator, which makes them think she will be ready to try breathing on her own soon. In order to facilitate this, they will take her off of the ventilator and place a trach in her neck. Sounds scary but it's just about the coolest thing we could ask for.
The doctors are going to give her medication to help relieve the swelling and excess fluid throughout her body, which will get her looking more and more like herself.
Next step is to address the pelvis. The fact that she was able to keep her vitals up throughout the surgery with the binder removed (and no bleeding) is a big deal. This tells us that she is strong enough to handle another surgery and may allow the ortho surgeon to do an internal fixation (more permanent solution) as opposed to an external fixation (temporary fix). This wouldn't happen until later this week.
Oh and as if this couldn't get any sweeter, I mentioned to the doctor that she tried to pull her tubes out last night and he said "Oh yea, when we were turning her to position her for surgery she grabbed the guys hand when he tried to touch her."
...Yea, that's right. Don't mess with momma.
Thank you for all of your good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and love. Please keep them coming, she still has a long road ahead of her. Like we have all been saying, Shari is a fighter.
