The Story

My brother, Shannon Hurd, passed away last night at The Louisiana State Penitentiary at the age of 42. He received a life sentence after a non-unanimous jury found him guilty of stealing $14.  He has maintained his innocence for the past decade.  While wrongfully incarcerated at Angola, Shannon developed cancer.

Though it is too late to clear his name and bring him home alive, we can ensure he does not remain on the prison grounds forever. Please donate to help get Shannon’s remains home so we can attend his memorial and visit his grave. Shannon’s life was plagued with injustice and pain; please help bring some justice to our family and peace to Shannon in his final resting.

Shannon was well loved by all, and he was never thrown away.  He was our brother -- not just another inmate -- and we want to remember him as such.  Thank you for your help.

Thank you all for your kindness and generosity.  Our family is touched beyond measure.  Thanks to your donations, we were able to lay Shannon to rest this past Saturday in a beautiful service in the church he grew up in, surrounded by friends, family, and advocates. Shannon was eulogized by a childhood friend and daughter of his pastor growing up.  His story has come full circle, as we were able to bury him next to his mother, his brother, and both sets of his grandparents.

Shannon is home now, and it is all thanks to you.

With love and gratitude,
The Hurd Family

We want to take a moment and thank everybody for being with our family -- for your blessings, for your compassion, for your kindness, and for your love.  We’re over the sorrow of Shannon being stolen from us; if we are crying, it is only tears of joy.  Shannon is free now, and this is what he wanted.

This Saturday, we will be laying Shannon to rest at our family plot, right next to our parents’ and our brother.  His funeral service will take place at the church he grew up in.  His story has truly come full circle, and now, finally, he is home.

With infinite love and gratitude,
The Hurd Family
