The Story

Scrap the Trap Pittsburgh is campaigning to stop the unjustified killing of between 2000 and 3000 wild animals a year by City Animal Control, encourage City residents to appreciate our wild neighbors, and provide them with effective assistance when they do encounter an issue with wildlife.

In fact, the number of animals who die as a result of this program probably increases to 5 figures if you count offspring of trapped animals left behind to die of starvation or animals that are simply "relocated" (a death sentence for many species) as part of Pittsburgh Animal Control's "free" trapping service. No other city in the nation offers a comparable service, where any city resident can keep trapping animals at great annual taxpayer expense, without having to prove risk or damage. Join us! Scrap the Trap is thrilled to announce that Portuguese street artist Bordalo II will be coming to Pittsburgh in mid-July to support the Scrap the Trap campaign!

Pittsburgh’s legendary Construction Junction is partnering with us for this event, by hosting the artwork and providing tools and materials.

Why is Bordalo so relevant to our campaign? Well first off, we’ve made visual media a focal point of our campaign, through our traveling art show, from the day it was launched. But most important of all, Bordalo specializes in a specific form of street art, creating amazing “recycled” sculptures out of trash and junk. His specific focus on animals, nature and environmental issues in general, in particular his stunning “trash” sculptures of everyday animals often viewed as pests, and the play on words between “Scrap” art and “Scrap the Trap” gives him an ideal profile for conveying our message.

We contacted Bordalo several months ago and he and his assistant have kindly agreed to come here and create a one-of-a-kind piece for Scrap the Trap. His work has been attracting a lot of interest internationally and we are incredibly lucky to have him come here to help promote our campaign!

We are covering the costs to bring Bordalo here in July. We are talking to a couple of potential sponsors, but will definitely need more contributions to total costs, so if you would like to contribute to this one-time-only event, please do so from this page. You will be very welcome to come and watch the piece being created between July 17 and 19, it promises to be very exciting!

Any remaining funds will be donated to the Humane Animal Rescue Wildlife Center.

You really have to see Bordalo’s work to understand how incredible it is, so check out some examples here:

Please be a part of this amazing project!
