Seattle Limbe Sister City Association (SLSCA) is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network whose mission is to create and strengthen partnerships between Seattle and Limbe, Cameroon. Our ultimate goal is to increase global cooperation at the municipal level, promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic development. Representing the City of Seattle, we collaborate with private citizens, municipal officials and business leaders to conduct long-term programs of mutual benefit.
Because girls worldwide suffer indignities, infection, even exploitation trying to stay in school during their menstrual cycles Sarah Allen Sisterhood (SAS) Women’s Ministry of First AME Church, in collaboration with SLSCA, formed Saturday Sewing Sisters a multi-cultural/multi-ethnic group of women, men, and children who volunteer tocreate Days for Girls feminine care kits to help girls in Cameroon stay in school. A delegation of 10 women delivered 1,200 kits to 6 schools in January 2016.
On our next trip to Cameroon is planned for December 4 - 20, 2016. We will take 1500 kits, train women to conduct the health training & to create Days for Girls feminine care kits as local businesses at 3 sites. Some supplies needed to create the kits are not available in Cameroon (P.U.L.—the moisture resistant fabric in the shields, Gallon-size Ziplock brand baggies, etc.) and will need to be purchased in the U.S.
Just a few days ago we were informed by the Delta Airlines that they would not be able to waive our baggage fees as was the case last year. Our flights are booked with one of their subsidiary airlines who do not waive baggage fees. Our most urgent need is to raise at least $7000 to cover the cost of shipping the kits and supplies by our departure date December 4. Any funds donated over the amount will be used for the continuing needs of the project as SLSCA/SSS has a 5 year commitment to the project.
