Just two years ago, Sarah, Erik, Charlotte (now 2.5 years old), and Watson (wise poochfriend) settled into their new home in Ventura, CA.
On December 4, 2017, the Thomas Fire destroyed their new home and nearly everything they owned. With only 30 minutes to gather belongings, Sarah ushered Charlotte and Watson to safety with very few things--her laptop computer and a few hard drives, a few portraits of Charlotte, and a little bit of memorabilia. Erik was in New Jersey at the time. When he learned from Sarah that they had been evacuated, he jumped on a plane. By the time the plane landed, the house was gone.
Still trying to understand what happened, Sarah and Erik must now navigate the process of rebuilding their lives after losing nearly everything. The coming months will be spent finding a new home (which is made difficult since they both commute in opposite directions), slowly replacing their belongings, and ensuring that both Charlotte and Watson are as happy as can be.
Insurance will help replace many (but not all) of their lost items. For instance, insurance doesn't cover the cost to replace Sarah's car, which was lost in the fire, or the extra childcare costs they are likely to incur as they now have to spend time finding a new home and rebuilding their lives.
Sarah and Erik are overwhelmed by the generosity of friends and family who’ve already sent them gift cards and clothes and toys for Charlotte so far. If you would like to and are able to support them as they begin this new chapter, please consider donating a small amount to their YouCaring account. But Sarah and Erik also recognize that there are others who have lost their homes who are in much greater need than they are. So they would be equally grateful for donations to the Ventura County Red Cross
or the Ventura County United Way
Thank you so much for your support!
