The Story

Diego Mendez is a phenomenal 14 year old who lives in Holland, Michigan with his mom, dad, and brother, Gabe.  He has been bringing laughter and joy into their home since the day he was born and he is the funniest, quirkiest, most personable kid you could meet.  His kind heart has made him so loved by everyone who knows him.  He loves science and skateboarding and learning new things and he has a kitten named "Pancho." He attends Macatawa Bay Middle School where he plays trumpet in the marching band and was working his first job at Kilwins in Saugatuck.

He was enjoying his summer when he became ill for several days.  He experienced a seizure and was rushed to the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital PICU in Grand Rapids where he continued to have seizures.

In order for his brain to rest, he has been put into a medically induced coma for several days.

Doctors still haven't figured out the source of the seizures but are attributing it to F.I.R.E.S.

On day #28 of his stay his blood pressure suddenly dropped and his heart stopped. They immediately began chest compressions and administering life saving meds. X-rays of his chest and abdomen indicated fluid in his abdomen. Emergency exploratory surgery revealed a large ulcer on his small intestine that had ruptured and was spilling contents into his abdominal cavity. This was repaired, and several surgeries later the wound is still trying to be closed.

The doctors are puzzling over the cause of his seizures and are working to keep him from having more while providing him with the best care and treatment.

Diego is in critical condition and his parents have not left his side.  Sarah and Pedro are dedicated and attentive parents and are showing incredible strength in this situation.  They have asked for prayers for their son and they believe that God will get them through this victoriously.

The purpose of this fund raising effort is to help with Diegos medical expenses and their living expenses while they are at his bedside.

Jan 30th marks 190 days in the hospital  and away from home for Diego! He continues to make progress, but has had many bumps in the road to recovery. Earlier this month he had surgery to remove his adenoids and tonsils with hopes that this would decrease some of the night time seizure activity due to Obstructive Apnea. The surgery went well and he is recovering nicely, however this is just one more setback in the process to get him back home. Your continued prayers are very much appreciated. We see the hand of God in the progress he has made so far and are so thankful for His goodness to each of us!

*140 Days have come and gone. Many changes and some improvements in some areas. The seizures attributed to F.I.R.E.S. Check out the link below for more information on F.I.R.E.S.:

This is day 60 at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. Diego is gaining some ground rebuilding muscle physically, however he is still experiencing seizures daily. It is difficult to determine what triggers a seizure. The medications he is presently on seem to have helped to minimize the number of seizures per day. We thank God for each improvement we see and every little step of progress in his rehabilitation.

Please continue to remember Diego in prayer. We appreciate every prayer that is lifted on Diego’s behalf. We pray God will reward you each for your faithfulness in this area.

DAY #100 of Diego’s recovery!

Today marks 100 days since Diego was struck down with F.I.R.E.S.

(Febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome).

He was in a medically induced coma for 48 days and spent 81 days at DeVos Children’s Hospital in the PICU. He has since been transferred to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital where he has been for the last 20 days.

The seizure activity has begun to increase the last few days and he has to be monitored closely, but things are progressing. Sometimes it seems slowly, but God has definitely touched Diego. Even with the sometimes numerous setbacks we are still pushing forward and expecting a complete and full recovery! God is good! Many thanks for all the prayers that have been sent heavenward on his behalf!
