The world lost a great man on June 8, when Steve Pye was struck and killed riding his bike near Chatfield State Park.
As we're all working through our grief and the loss of someone who touched our lives in so many positive ways, there are a couple of themes that stick out in nearly all of the memories and stories being shared: he loved his family, and he loved coaching athletes.
Steve gave so much of himself to so many of us on so many levels. Technical coaching, education, and guidance as athletes - but more importantly, friendship, kindness, and love as people he cared about.
This Memorial Fund is set up to support those two great loves mentioned above: Steve's family - primarily Ethan's future endeavors in education and other ambitions as he gets older - and a local youth cycling program, Trips for Kids Denver.
Steve and Sarah have already set up a college fund for Ethan, and any amounts earmarked for that purpose will be deposited in the existing account. Trips for Kids Denver is a local not-for-profit that promotes health and personal empowerment for youth.
I can't tell you the number of times I thanked Steve for inviting me on a ride or giving me some sort of advice, only to hear him reply, "Don't thank me. So many people gave me help and guidance when I was younger, I just want you to give back when it's your turn."
That's the legacy this fund will promote.
