The Story

While on a family trip from their home in Michigan to see Grandma and Grandpa in Virginia, Sarah developed a fever that spiked pretty high. After consulting her oncologist in Michigan, it was time for a trip to the emergency department to be evaluated. After getting put through the fast lane, they knew it couldn't be good. Those words, "Your Cancer is back" is not what anyone could ever want to hear. Devon and Sarah are still processing through the new reality of a reoccurrence of Sarah's Acute Myeloid Leukemia. It is the same Leukemia that almost killed her back in 2016 during an initial stay of 75 days for treatment with many life threatening complications. After spending a total of 100 days in the hospital last time, the idea of more time in the hospital was crushing. Even more so now that their children are only three and five years old and without their Mommy. It was also devastating to know that with this reoccurrence Sarah's chances of going back into remission are less than a 50/50 chance.

This fundraiser is for Sarah Roberts, to help with mounting medical bills and the cost of relocating to Baltimore, Maryland to be close to Johns Hopkins Hospital for treatment. that she can be within one hour drive of the hospital for the next year. Her husband, Devon has made the commitment to stand next to her and be her primary caregiver through this journey. He has left two part-time jobs to stay by his wife's side in the hospital. Because they are out of state, they must move to Maryland for treatment and that will require a new deductible/out of pocket max to be met at the end of 2017 followed by another deductible/out of pocket max met in January of 2018. Their cost to move from Michigan to Maryland is expected to be around $3,000. The deductible for the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018 are estimated at each costing between $8,000 and $13,000. Devon's expenses in the hospital are fairly low, with just food costs and simple amenities. Over the next four to six months, Sarah and Devon will need an estimated $40,000+ before Devon can return to work when Sarah is stable enough to be without 24 hour medical supervision.

Devon and Sarah are now living in Baltimore, Maryland at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Their belongings are in Redford, Michigan and their children are in Virginia. It is a very chaotic time, and the second greatest need in their life right now after Sarah's cure from Leukemia and a matched bone marrow transplant donor is some financial peace of mind and provision. There are many ways that you can help. You can visit them in the hospital, you can donate here to their YouCaring campaign, and you can share this campaign to spread the word about Sarah's needs. You can also follow Sarah on their Caring Bridge Blog HERE: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/sarah.roberts or on their Facebook page Here:  https://www.facebook.com/AMLteamsarah/

Please spread the word and pray for Sarah's treatment and that she would be matched with a potential donor for her bone marrow transplant as this is the only hope for her cure from Leukemia and to be with her young babies once again!

You did it again! We've just had another huge donation of $1,000! We are well past our first two goals of $10,000 and then $15,000. It's incredible! So many things happening here! Your gifts covered my quick trip back to Michigan where we had over 30 volunteers come to our house to pack everything by 11:30am Saturday morning!

Someone who shared our story with a family member connected us with someone who owns a second house in Baltimore. They have offered for us to stay in that house free of charge for as long as we need!!! The house is only 20 min from the hospital. Can you believe that!?! We hope to work out the final details on Monday!

Next big expenses coming up are the truck to haul all of our things to Maryland, then a storage unit while we are in treatment for the bone marrow transplant. We expect that process to take around 90 days of mostly daily visits to the hospital. The truck should cost around $1,500 - $2,000 for the trip and we've found a few storage options for around $280/month. Finally, daily parking will cost around $8-$12 for the 90 days.

Once we have our address, we begin transferring everything to that address including our insurance. When we transfer insurance, we'll need to pay the full out of pocket expense for the year again in 2017 during December. Once we start 2018, we'll start a new insurance plan and will have everything start over with a new deductible and out of pocket max. Hopefully in the next week or two, we'll have an idea of what those costs might be.

Thank you so much for supporting us in this journey! We'll have new updates for you soon. Please continue to pray for Sarah this week as she is close to restarting her bone marrow, but there is something happening in her lungs that has everyone concerned. Please pray that she will continue to heal and start that bone marrow back up to have an immune system.

Thanks!

P.S. We have some of our Christmas decorations up in our hospital room!

Wow! We are just blown away by the support of so many people! It's incredible to see so many people standing with us through this challenge. We made our goal of $10,000!!! This is amazing! Your generosity has given us such a peace knowing that we are covered by you. Our "Team-Sarah" teammates are such a blessing to us.

We have been actively searching for housing the past few days in hope of being ready with a place for Sarah the moment we are discharged from the hospital. We don't know when that will be, but we take the next step tomorrow as I fly back to Michigan to pack our house into boxes to be ready to move. We hope that by 5pm on Saturday, the whole house is boxed and ready to move. We don't know when we will move just yet, but this is the next step.

Thank you you for being a blessing in our life! More updates to follow!!!
