The Story

For over 18 years, Homework Central has supported underperforming 3rd-5th grade students in the San Mateo-Foster City School District.  Most students are primarily Hispanic children from economically challenged families. We work to develop and encourage our students’ capacities to learn and achieve through homework assistance, tutoring, skills development, technology training, and family support. Our four after school homework centers, staffed by caring volunteers and led by fully qualified site coordinators and aides, can mitigate obstacles so that children can become capable students and life-long learners.

With your help, the children we serve are closer to graduating from elementary school and later high school, and are getting a fair shot at a college education.

Dear Homework Central Supporter,

If you have not yet donated to Homework Central this year, my promise to you is

that you can still help to change the world of a child…right now…with a gift to

Homework Central.

Thank you for your generous donation last year Because of your generosity,

young students are overcoming barriers that challenge them each day. With your

help again this year we can continue to increase their odds for success.

You and I know that having a caring adult who believes in you makes a

significant difference in a child’s success in school and beyond.

That’s the secret formula at Homework Central. It’s why many vulnerable

children respond, even when facing an uphill battle in their lives.

This belief begins to transform into self-confidence and a sense of

achievement. They care about me! That’s when everything changes.

Your gift, in any amount, can turn a life around. Please donate today.

Maria is a sophomore at a local high school.  Not long ago, she was a 3rd grader attending Homework Central.  Maria was referred by her teacher because she was well below grade level.  Three years with Homework Central changed her life.  Her academic performance improved and with it came greater self-confidence.  Today, Maria works as a Homework Central aide at the very same center she attended in elementary school.  She wants younger students to have the same opportunity to succeed that she had.  Maria plans to become a physician or a psychologist …and work with kids!

Natasha was a shy, struggling 3rd grader when she came to Homework Central.  Having a place to study and helpful tutors to guide her was transformative.  Natasha became a whiz at math.  By the 5th grade, she was an excellent student who played soccer and was learning to play the violin.  Her improved self-esteem was obvious: she knew she could achieve her goals!  A local school serving high achieving children observed Natasha’s potential.  She now attends this school on a full scholarship!
