The Story

On August 27, my husband and I waded through high waters to help my mom, Sandra, escape from her home. With water rising quickly, she was not able to save a lot of her belongings. She grabbed a quick bag and left her house, not knowing if it would still be there when she returns. This woman is the definition of strength. In 2017 alone, she has undergone Chemotherapy to  fight against ovarian cancer. A month after winning that battle, her house fell victim to Hurricane Harvey and all of his wrath. Her home took in about 2 feet of water, but the hardest part is the water is going down very slowly. With water now out of her house, it just sits in the streets. We have not been able to even begin the clean up process. After living in this house for over 20 years, this is the first time her home has come close to flooding. She has a long road ahead of her with a lot of expenses. She does not have any flood insurance and all expenses will be coming out of her own pocket. On top of those expenses, she is trying to put her youngest daughter through college, all while doing this on her own. While we are confident that we will rebuild and be strong, your help will ease the burden of HUGE financial expenses to come. We love our city, we are hoUSton Strong!

Hi All! It has been a month since Harvey slowly moved through the Katy/Houston area. Demolition at Sandra's house took place about two weeks later. Since then, there hasn't been much to update on for the house; it looks the same at the pictures show. Her house still sits idol as we wait to get started. We have daily trips to the house to empty out the dehumidifiers that are constantly working to dry the house out (thanks to our family who helps with this). We have been meeting with contractors and getting quotes. They are estimating it will take 6-8 weeks to do the remodel, but won't be able to start for about another month, which is a blessing in disguise as we get the mold inspector out.  This is such a long process, but we know will get through it and back to "normal" at some point. FEMA still has not come out to the house. We now have an agent assigned to us, but haven't heard from them- frustrating.

Thank you all for your continuous love, support and prayers. On a new note, we are car shopping! We found out that Sandra's car had mold and rust forming under her dash, so the car was totaled out- bummer! I will post pictures on here as the rebuilding process begins. Love to you all!

Things are coming along and progress is being made. We can ACTUALLY see that Sandra's house is salvageable and the rebuilding process is in sight. I have to say...I NEVER want to see wood floors again. Those were a NIGHTMARE to get up. After leaving today, they were ALMOST up. My aunt, uncle and cousin stayed late to chip those up and finish that project. Dehumidifiers are up and running and the drying out process has started. Mold elimination is also underway- got to get rid of that nasty stuff! I learned today that it could actually enter through your ear canal! Note to self- always wear ear plugs. On the plus side, we are all learning so much about construction through this whole process. Where would you be without friends and family?? None of this would be possible without y'all. Everyone of you have helped more than you know. We are so blessed! We love you!

And so the pile begins...Looks like she will be losing almost everything she owns due to having a one-story house. Water got into every part of her house! More to come as we make progress. We also found out that her car will be totaled due to water getting inside.
