The Story

UPDATE 1/19/17: As of 11:40am on this date, Sammie will be no more. She stopped eating and was in obvious distress, and there was nothing more I could do to help her. But I still have debt for her care to pay off, so this fundraiser is still open until the 31st of March, which is the deadline for paying off the balance to VCA. Thank you to everyone who has already helped. And to everyone who hasn't yet contributed, please consider doing so, even just a little. Thank you.

-------

Sammie is an old tortoise-shell cat whom I adopted in 2009 after my Hannah-girl died. She is nearly 17 years old and somewhat rickety, but I love her like family. For about a year, she has been diabetic, a condition for which she's been in and out of the vet hospital for the last couple of months.

I'm actually writing while waiting in an exam room at the VCA. Sammie is getting more tests. The good news is that she might have recovered enough pancreatic function to no longer need insulin. The bad news is that she needs more tests that are gonna cost in the neighborhood of $3,500, and I've already spent over $5,000 on hospital bills for her, and I'm out of funds and options.

So ... I'm asking for help. You can donate to this fundraiser, you can purchase music on my website at http://music.ebenbrooks.com/, you can hire me to do a house concert*, or you can hire me as a photographer**. And if you have another idea, run it by me.

Thank you.

-------

*A house concert is where you invite a bunch of your friends to your home, they pay a nominal admission charge (usually $20), and I perform a show for them (and you). The farther I have to travel, the larger the audience needs to be in order to cover my expenses. Having hosted a number of house concerts myself, I can attest to the fact that it's a lovely experience that people enjoy very much.

**I am primarily a portrait and figure photographer, but I will also photograph your event. Contact me for details. I can guarantee you that I will beat pretty much anyone else's price. The reason for this is that I'm NOT an established professional in the field. I've been a hobbyist for 30 years, and I like to think that I'm no slouch, but I don't have any illusions that I'm a pro, either.

Yesterday I managed to pay about a third of the balance of what I owe VCA thanks in part to the contributions of all of you. I still have about $2,400 to go, but I've got six weeks to raise it. Thank you all very much. And please, keep spreading the word. This is working.

I'm now a bit more than a quarter of the way to my fundraising goal, and I have 51 days to raise the other three-quarters (or acquire it some other way). Thank you to everyone who has contributed, and especially to those who have done so recently. It's hard to keep the momentum going after five weeks, especially since it's been *three* weeks since Sammie was euthanized. But I have to get that balance paid off by March 31, so please keep spreading the word.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the tip jar at the show on Saturday. All counted up, it came to $52.56. That money will definitely help, and I am very grateful. Thank you also to Louis the sound man, who usually gets the contents of the tip jar for doing his job of making Allison and me sound awesome, but who gave it up this time to help me get through this crisis.

With this money and an in-person donation from a friend (you know who you are, and thank you a thousand times), I'm almost at the $1000 mark, which is 20% of my current goal. I will do some calculations this week, however, to see if I need to amend the goal again. My balance with the VCA is approximately $3,600, but not EXACTLY $3,600, and there were other ancillary expenses that I had to put on my credit card prior to putting up the fundraiser. I think my current goal is accurate, but it might need to be adjusted downward again. However, it won't be by much. So I still need you to spread the word as much as you can.

Thanks again.
