Completed: Our promised 200-mile in 24 (daylight) hours bicycle ride for the Cates Family River Valley Schools Endowment Challenge- In Memory of our son Peter: Monday June 5th 170 miles (in just over 17 hours) with son Eric pulling me for the last 50 miles, and the final 30 miles the next morning,Tuesday June 6th (in just over 2 hours)...Kim was a hero serving as the support vehicle through the first very, very, very long day, up at 2:45am and with me till the sweet end...
Fun and funny fact: My bicycle computer set for my age and weight indicated I burned more than 13,000 calories on the trek...almost as many calories as funds raised...-:)
Funds raised, as I write this, is approaching $17k (and going strong) in just over two-and-a-half weeks ...We're gettin' it done thanks to so many caring souls from the River Valley community!
With so much appreciation, and heartfelt thank yous!
The Cates Family
PS: New pictures posted are: Start of the Ride at 3:30am Monday 6/5 Ashland County line; on the ride with a picture of son Peter; mile 120 with hero son Eric who pulled me along in his draft to mile 170; and Ride completed with 200 miles on the odometer, Tuesday morning 6/6!
CATES FAMILY $10K CHALLENGE- with a 50% MATCH!
200 MILE 24hr BICYCLE RIDE IN MEMORY OF PETER CATES TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE RVSD ENDOWMENT
By way of giving back some of the love and nurturing support we have received from the River Valley community and schools, we are conducting a fund-raising challenge in memory of our deceased son, Peter— he would be 30 years old this year. All the funds will go to support the River Valley School District (RVSD) Endowment. Dick Cates (the bicycle rider…mostly) and Kim Cates (the support vehicle ‘rider’…mostly, she hopes) will set out with a goal to Ride Like a Hawk 200 miles—from Ashland County in the far north to the River Valley-- in 24 (daylight) hours on or near the Summer Solstice. Our family has committed the first $2K; all funds raised will be matched 50%—1$ for every 2$ raised—by an anonymous donor!
We were blessed to have three children who attended River Valley Schools; all three loved their experience. Shannon and Eric are healthy, gifted young people, and they have thrived. Our youngest son, Peter, was born with Down Syndrome; and a few years later contracted childhood leukemia. After a four-year struggle, he lost his battle in 1994, at seven years old.
The River Valley community opened their arms for this little soul; he was treated with an embrace of kindness that our family will never be able to repay. And even though Peter never spoke an intelligible word – this never stopped him from expressing himself! His love of school and for all the River Valley folks who shared his life shone brilliantly through his enduring smile and innumerable hugs of cheer and gratitude.
The RVSD Endowment is one of the community’s best ideas dedicated to helping our teachers and students take on creative projects and activities that add to the classroom curriculum*. Support for the Endowment allows all of us to come together, to ‘pull the same rope’ to provide student learning opportunities that go above and beyond ordinary classroom experiences.
So we want to celebrate—not just Peter’s life, but the remarkable opportunities that have been bestowed on us because we the people of the River Valley community take care of each other. Together, we have the boundless capacity to lift each other higher.
We are asking you for your pledge for this 200-mile, 24-hour bicycle ride from Ashland County to the River Valley to raise funds for the RVSD Endowment in memory of Peter Cates, a boy who embraced and embodied the River Valley dream: to Soar Like a Hawk!
PLEASE MAKE A PLEDGE TODAY
*The RVSD Endowment is in place to provide financial assistance, on a competitive grants basis, for teachers who have inspiring ideas about how to enhance student learning, in or out of the classroom. The Endowment seeks to serve all River Valley students, regardless of age, gender, learning ability or disability.
