The Story

Olaf's Schiehallion Challenge -  1st of January 2017, From dawn till dusk: running up and down as many times as possible, by Olaf Potters.

Schiehallion is known as the fairy mountain. Unfortunately a dogs and cats life on the streets of Bulgaria is no fairy-tale at all.  They live their life in harsh conditions and are exposed daily to abuse, famine, diseases, traffic and the risk of being shot. No-one cares about them. Luckily RSDR does care and saves them from the streets and provides safety in their shelter.

With this challenge I'm going to expose myself to the harsh winter conditions on Shiehallion to raise money and awareness for RSDR. The height of Schiehallion is 1083 meters, the route to the summit is 5 km long and counts 731 meters in height. During the day I'll need to conquer snow, ice, rocks and boulders in the harsh weather conditions of the Scottish mountains. GoPro camera and GPS will register the challenge and to prove the times I made it to the summit. Please support me and RSDR! The goal is to raise enough money to get all adult dogs neutered.

What an incredible effort by Olaf at Schiehallion Mountain on New Years Day. Here is Olaf's summary on the day. (A video of the day will be released soon)

"After a total of 30km distance and 2250m in altitude, I can feel it in my legs. The first ascent went relatively easily but after the 800m altitude mark it was already -5*C with a windchill of -20*C due to the snow and gusts of wind. Despite that I continued of course! The second time was already somewhat tougher and many hikers on the same path decided to turn back half way up. With all the support I had received I decided that giving up was not an option! Don't worry, I was careful and didn't take unnecessary risks as I know that unfortunately many (fatal) accidents do happen in the Scottish mountains.

With the GPS on and Runtastic to follow my trail, I could hear the 'likes' coming from my smartphone in the backpack. I tried to film as much as I could but it was difficult under the conditions. Hanneke and Peter were waiting at the foot of the mountain to give me food, dry clothes and of course moral support. Even our lovely Max and Gypsy and of course RSDR foster dog Ted were a happy sight to return to after every walk!

Running in such cold and harsh conditions was a stark reminder what the animals go through every winter on the streets in Rudozem, day in and day out. I am very pleased with the challenge considering the harsh conditions and hope all who donated appreciate it too. You have donated an incredible amount for the dogs and cats of RSDR! Soon we will post the final amount collected and of course some footage on the day of the challenge. Thank you to everyone for your support and donations!"
