The Story

On Tuesday, May 1st, Rod Hand and his kayak were found washed ashore near Pebble Beach in California by a local surfer. Rod was attempting a 60-90 day solo kayak paddle from California to Hawaii to raise aweness to Wounded Warriors. Rod had no pulse and responding paramedics got a pulse back through CPR.

Rod's family (sister, parents, and twin children) have travelled from Texas to California to be by Rod's side. Their expenses will be significant. I would like to raise funds so they can remain with Rod. Rod's children will benefit most from the assistance - they need to stay by their Dad.

Rod has remained unresponsive and on life support. However, an MRI on May 3 showed activity to most of his brain with damage to others. Rod's road to recovery will be a battle, but if anyone could survive this, Rod could.  I've known Rod for over 20 years. He is the most humble and giving person I've ever met.  It's time to help him and his family.

Rod is a former Army Ranger who spent most of his law enforcement career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons before retiring from the Air Marshals. He is now a volunteer firefighter and Engine Boss with Tallahassee Volunteer Fire Department and has been deployed to numerous national wildfires along with serving at local fires. He responds to local emergencies and vehicle accidents routinely.

Funds are directly deposited to Rod's sister, Lynn, who is handling all matters for the family. Please continue to pray for Rod and send all the positive energy you can.

NO DONATION IS TOO SMALL AND GREATLY APPRECIATED !

Here’s the Tuesday night update From Lynn:

Rod is doing great everyone but he still has a long way to go!  We talked to the doctor that specializes in his trach rehab and she had us expecting to be here about another month to two months. Her goal was to have Rod advanced enough to have his trach removed before he leaves this hospital. Then the discharge person came and talked to us and told us she thinks we may be back in Texas in one to two weeks but he would still have his trach. So things are kinda a little iffy at this time. If the trach is removed transportation will be simpler. He would not need a medical flight. If he still has his trach he would need a medical flight which is really expensive. I mean really expensive!  Rod is doing GREAT!  When we got there he was sitting in a chair for the first time!  Watching TV!!!  Bright eyed and smiling!  Kathy, a friend that visits and reads to him, was there before us and said when Rod stood today all the nurses were lined up, clapping and crying!  Bless their hearts!  Keep the prayers coming!  Please add Mother, Daddy and I to your prayers so we have guidance on our decisions and transportation back to Texas!  Thank you so much!

Monday night awesome update from Rod‘s sister:

What a wonderful day!  I hope everyone saw Rod's picture standing!  Rod's friend Troy was there during physical therapy and saw him stand and got the picture!  Troy said Rod did good during therapy!  Very special day!  Also, David and Chris came by and brought ROD a beer from Germany!  David said straight off the plane!!!  You show have seen Rod smiling from ear to ear!  He wanted it and didn't want to give it back to them!  LOL!  When they came in they both reached out to shake Rod's hand and he reached out his hand and shook them!  Everyone please keep praying!  With God's will and Rod's will, Rod has THIS!  Thank you everyone!

Saturday night update:

Today Rod sat up on the edge of his bed again. The physical therapist said he is doing good!  We don't know how long he will be here but we did find a place in Lubbock that can help ROD with kidneys and rehab. Passed contacts to each other. Thank you Andy!  Now we are trying to figure out how we can get him there. Also, the therapist said they will probably try to stand him up either tomorrow or Monday!!!!  The Lord does wondrous things!!!
