The Story

On June 25th, 2016, River, Scarlet, and 4 others were branded at a spiritual retreat.  They expected healing to be a lengthy process, but they did not realize quite how injured they were.  River's life and her foot were at risk, but both were saved thanks to modern medicine.  Scarlet's hand was also put in danger and both of them needed debridement surgery and a skin graft to begin to recover.

The healing process is still far from complete and the risk of complication and infection is still high.

We are raising money to help cover these unexpected medical costs.  Any extra money raised will be donated to the Children's Burn Foundation, a non-profit that funds treatment for children who have suffered serious burns around the world.

Thank you to everyone who has supported River, Scarlet, and the others in their recovery.  We were able to cover all of last year's medical expenses thanks to these donations.

Thanks to the skill and care of River's nurses, doctors, and surgeons, she did not lose any function in her foot.  However, her ankle is still painful at times and she needs to use compression socks.

River recently completed her therapy related to the burn and we are still waiting for one bill that should come to $700-800.  I have updated the goal of this campaign with that in mind.  Any additional funds we receive beyond our costs will be donated to the Children's Burn Foundation, so please help us reach our goal.

Scarlet's Story
On June 26th, Scarlet received her brand: "I got a triangle. I didn't even know why in the moment. That's just what came out of my mouth when he asked me what I wanted. I later found out that it is the alchemical symbol for fire and change and transformation. Fitting from the night before and what was to come."

Over the following weeks, the brand became infected: "It wasn't until the triangle in the middle of the brand, of unbranded flesh, began to shrink, and I noticed that the perimeter of the brand outside, was getting wider in circumference, that I finally relented and decided to go to the emergency room. Weeks later than I likely should have."

After treating the infection and doing some debridement, surgery was recommended: "She said that she recommended surgery for a skin graft the next day and said she would schedule the OR so it would be available if I chose to go through with the procedure."

The healing process continues: "On the fourth day, the doctors came back in and looked at it. They said I was well enough to go home and begin healing there.  I don't know if it was that very day or the next, but I had a terrible breakdown once I got home. Still sore and weak, I felt like a burden to the house. I wanted to die. A reminder that progress doesn't equal arriving at one's destination"

Long Road to Recovery

River was released from the hospital on July 17th, but her healing is still far from complete.  The wound is not fully healed and the risk of complication is still high.

Likewise, Scarlet and the others are still healing from this horrendous mistake.  What was supposed to be a controlled body modification became a life and death matter.
