I am Eleanor de Guzman from the Philippines.
My father, Rafael Baylosis, is a peace consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines on political and constitutional reforms and a long-time trade union activist. He was arrested without a warrant and on fabricated charges on January 31, 2018.
My husband, Marklen Maojo Maga is a trade union organizer of the Kilusang Mayo Uno (May First Movement or KMU). He was abducted on February 22, 2018, and was later charged with similar false charges.
My father and husband are both social activists and peace workers. On February 21, 2018, more than 600 individuals are named in a petition to the Philippine Justice Department to proscribe the Communist Party of the Philippines and the New People’s Army as terrorist organizations (See Karapatan Urgent Appeal for Activists, Human Rights defenders and Political Dissenters in the Philippines).
My father Rafael Baylosis, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, Karapatan Executive Committee member Elisa Tita Lubi, village chief of the Matigsalog-Manobo tribe Datu Isidro Indao and several other rights defenders in the Philippines are included in this fake terrorist list. This petition, citing the Philippine Human Security Act of 2007, aims to suppress legitimate dissent and activism.
This deplorable act attempts to intimidate, threaten, harass, target and criminalize persons and defenders who have been working for people’s rights and welfare, amid the deplorable human rights situation under Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.
Help us raise funds for the legal defense and safety of the rights defenders included in the list.
I am also appealing to rights advocates, individuals and organizations from various countries to join us in the campaign to junk this petition and to stop labeling of activists, human rights defenders and patriots as “terrorists” in national and international forums.
