The Story

Renewed Hope Health Clinic, located in Allegan, MI, provides free medical and mental health care to patients who are most in need.  The clinic serves uninsured and under-insured adult residents of Allegan County, with income below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. Many of our patients find themselves without the ability to afford insurance, even despite the Affordable Care Act - given competing priorities such as utilities, food and shelter. Even if they can afford the premiums, often deductibles are so high that health care still remains out of reach financially for these individuals.

We are a faith-based organization, who strives to provide compassionate and quality health care services while sharing the love of Christ.  Pastoral counselling is offered to those who wish to receive such guidance.

The clinic is staffed exclusively by medical and clinical volunteers.  Several prominent doctors in the community give freely of their time to treat our patients.  Our counselling staff are likewise qualified volunteers.  All staff provide of their time and energy to serve others, based upon our faith.

Partnerships with other medical and mental health providers in the area ensure that patients can receive referrals to low cost diagnostic testing and to specialists. Our patients are also provided with assistance to apply for Medicaid or other applicable insurance coverage, to navigate state and federal benefits, and also to help access Patient Assistance - assistance that can help with the high cost of medications.

We are building our Patient Care Fund through this campaign.  Renewed Hope operates based exclusively on donations and grants.  Although grants do exist to assist free health clinics, many of these cannot be used to fund our expenses, and are targeted towards special projects or initiatives.  In order to sustain and secure this clinic's ability to provide patient care for the future, this campaign is being established in order to raise money that will supplement other forms of fundraising.  Retaining a physical building, ensuring sufficient funds for basic expenses, and the ability to secure stable services and staff, through the establishment and maintenance of our Patient Care Fund, will ensure that Renewed Hope can continue to provide our current levels of high quality services and care to our patients, free of charge, for years to come.

How Can You Make a Difference?

Below you will find a summary of two of our patients that we have been able to serve at Renewed Hope Health Clinic.  More details on these cases, and others, will be posted to our site. The following are cases of real individuals whose lives have been dramatically improved through the services we have been able to provide to them. We rejoice in our ability to make such a positive difference.

Paul, a middle aged male resident of Allegan, was professionally employed as a social worker when hard t imes fell upon him.  Personal tragedy, health concerns and the loss of his employment occurred simultaneously, and he was left without medical coverage.  Within one week of meeting with Dr. Fish at the clinic, Paul was assisted with an application to Medicaid, given prescriptions to needed medications along with information regarding the most affordable pharmacy to purchase them, and also scheduled for diagnostic testing.  Following up with Paul, Dr. Fish was able to ensure a diagnosis and a long term treatment plan.  Today, Paul is working again, doing extremely well financially and extremely grateful for the
help that he received in his time of need.

Michelle is a young woman who was raised by her mother and a supportive step-father.  However, as is often the case with many youth today, poor choices and mistakes led her to choose the wrong friends.  She financed her lifestyle and so-called friendships by stealing from her mother (forging checks).  She was reported to the police and later charged with a felony as a result.  In the meantime, she made better friends who bailed her out, and met a wonderful, smart and supportive young man.  Although she feared his reaction to her past, he fortunately stood by her through her legal issues. Despite facing a jail term and future probation, he proposed to her before she was sentenced.  After her sentence was complete, she was able to turn her life around.  Today, she is married to this young man, her best friend. She is working part time, pursuing a college education and is fully content with the life she has been able to build for herself.  After her release, she still felt confused, bitter, angry and still had hatred towards the world.  She credits her success with the loving support of her husband and his family, along with the counselling she received at Renewed Hope during her probation.  Her gratitude for the help in turning things around is evident to all who listen or read her story.

The above are just two examples of how much of a difference Renewed Hope Health Clinic is making in the lives of those in our community.  There are many more stories that we will share in time. Please give to our Patient Care Fund so that we can continue having these successes.

Charley’s Story

“Do you help autistic people?” The question came to me from one of our longtime patients. “I know this lady who has a grown child with autism.” I asked her some clarifying questions, and learned the young man was not receiving any services directed specifically to the disabled. To make it worse, his general practitioner, who was not trained in treating people with autism, took him off his medications. The behaviors were becoming quite violent, and his mother, Sue, had no idea how to get help.

“Why don’t I call your friend.” When I got Sue on the phone, I asked her if her child was seeing a psychiatrist.

“He can’t talk.”

“He can still see a psychiatrist.” I took some time to explain a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who treats people who have problems thinking or with behaviors. After concluding the conversation, I had the opportunity to step into Sue’s world. My first call was to an agency whose mission is to assist people with mental illness. I spoke directly to a staff person and explained, due to this young man’s autism, he could not get into the building. He is afraid of groups of people. The staff person explained psychiatrists definitely do not make house calls or see patients outside the facility. “Too bad,” was the staff person’s reply. the intake would have to take place at the facility and a therapist could decide to see the patient outside the facility if it was needed. Since the patient is nonverbal, I was not sure how much the therapist could do.

I made another call to our nurse practitioner specializing in mental health treatment. He agreed to do some investigation, to see if someone could visit this young man at his school, where he was comfortable. I had only been in Sue’s shoes for about 30 minutes, but I was already beginning to see finding help for Charley would be quite the undertaking. Two days later, it was determined there was no one who would see Charley in an environment where he was comfortable. Our nurse practitioner suggested Charley come to Renewed Hope to see if there was something we could do for him here. By this time, Charley had already become to upset to be able to even get into the car.

Charley is receiving some treatment, now, because the staff at Renewed Hope were willing to step outside the facility to meet a need. I thought of the house calls Renewed Hope staff have made to help until another service was able to take over. Imagine how frustrating this would be if this were your sister, brother or child? Please help Renewed Hope to keep helping those who do not have a voice to ask for help. Sometimes, we have the only hope to extend to those with no place to go.

In our first week, we have had a number of donations, and are so grateful for the support thus far.  More materials will be added to this funding page shortly, so check it out often to see videos and more patient stories.  Your support is very much appreciated. We ask that you continue to share our campaign with your Facebook friends, encouraging them to donate.  We are hoping to meet our goal.  Having a healthy Patient Care Fund will ensure we are able to continue providing the same, or greater levels of medical and mental health care to the patients who need it most.  Thank you for your generosity and support.
