The Story

Happy Easter everyone!  What a glorious day...I am alive!  My name is Sawyer, and in case you have not heard of me, I am what they call a "cruelty case."  I was severely abused at the hands of humans, and then discarded as trash on the brink of death.  I have numerous serious medical issues including being severely emaciated, a bullet in my abdomen, multiple fractures of my pelvis, dislocated hips, a calcified mass in my colon impeding my ability to defecate, distended bladder, dangerously high white blood count and low red blood count, sores all over my body, and much more.

Someone dumped me at Kenworth truck dealership at 6855 North Loop East on April 5th or 6th. I was unable to stand or walk.   An employee called animal control who picked me up and took me to BARC, the city pound.  They knew I was in critically ill, and sent out a plea on my behalf to the rescue groups.   Red Collar Rescue responded and immediately took me to the ER.   The vets at the ER said I was a "train wreck"...one of the worst cases of abuse they had ever seen.

I have now been in ICU with round the clock care, IV fluids and a cocktail of medicines, for 8 days.  At this point, every day I survive is a blessing.  I need surgery to repair the fractures in my pelvis and hips and to remove the mass in my colon, but this cannot be done until I am healthy enough to have anesthesia.  The vets are trying to partially dissolve the calcified mass in my colon thru enemas and other means, so that I can eat and potty normally and gain some weight, which will hopefully help me become strong enough for surgery.

The police are investigating my case.  If you have any information that might help, please notify HPD.  I hope they find the person that did these horrible things to me.

If you can help with my HUGE vet bills, please make a tax-deductible donation to Red Collar Rescue!  My ICU costs are over $1000 per day, and I still have orthopedic surgery ahead of me, which will be at least another $5000.  These high costs are a real hardship, but RCR is committed to be there with me each step of the way, and they need your assistance.   Donations can be made by clicking the DONATE NOW button, or by mailing a check to Red Collar Rescue, 945 McKinney Street #424, Houston, TX  77002.

I have wonderful people taking care of me, and I know so many more are praying for me and sending positive thoughts.   I am tired and beaten, but I am not giving up.  I am hoping that maybe one of you reading my story will want to foster and/or adopt me when I am healthy enough to leave the vet clinic....how is that for positive thinking!

With Love and Gratitude!
Sawyer

Sawyer has been doing great, and is steadily improving while at his foster home.  He visits the vet regularly, and just had a check-in. He weighs 32 pounds now! He has been learning all about the good life, and loves to cuddle up with his foster mom.  He has also discovered the joy of toys, and loves to toss and carry his favorites around.  He is a silly and sweet boy!
We will know more about whether he will need surgery after he visits with surgeons regarding his hips.

Sawyer is a thriving, happy boy today because of the outpouring of support he has received.  THANK YOU!!!!!

Happy, Happy news today! After 37 days in Intensive Care, Sawyer got to leave the hospital and go to a foster home... the next step in his long road to recovery. Once he gains a little more weight, he will have orthopedic surgery on his hip and maybe his pelvis if needed. All the staff at VERGI came out to tell him goodbye. They all signed his bandana wishing him well! He has a wonderful new foster mom and a nice soft bed to rest in. Look at that smile!

His medical bill is huge, and he still has a ways to go.  We thank you for your continued support.

SAWYER UPDATE: Sawyer is still in the ICU, but we are hoping he will be able to be released soon. We are quite literally on "poop watch", waiting for him to have consistently normal poops. He has had his meds adjusted, and probiotics added. He is on a prescription "bland" diet. He is so close! We are hopeful it will be just another few days. In the meantime, he really enjoys his volunteer visits, and has become a huge fan of belly rubs. He is soaking up the attention. He is such a SWEET boy!
He is still quite skinny, and will be on prescription food for a while. Once he is healthy enough for surgery, he will need to have at least one hip replacement. So, he's still got a way to go, but we are over the moon that he seems to be on the mend.
We could not do this without this great community of animal lovers. Thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and shares! Thank you for believing with us that this little life is worthwhile. Thank you for your continued support.
