The Story

Happy Easter everyone!  What a glorious day...I am alive!  My name is Sawyer, and in case you have not heard of me, I am what they call a "cruelty case."  I was severely abused at the hands of humans, and then discarded as trash on the brink of death.  I have numerous serious medical issues including being severely emaciated, a bullet in my abdomen, multiple fractures of my pelvis, dislocated hips, a calcified mass in my colon impeding my ability to defecate, distended bladder, dangerously high white blood count and low red blood count, sores all over my body, and much more.

Someone dumped me at Kenworth truck dealership at 6855 North Loop East on April 5th or 6th. I was unable to stand or walk.   An employee called animal control who picked me up and took me to BARC, the city pound.  They knew I was in critically ill, and sent out a plea on my behalf to the rescue groups.   Red Collar Rescue responded and immediately took me to the ER.   The vets at the ER said I was a "train wreck"...one of the worst cases of abuse they had ever seen.

I have now been in ICU with round the clock care, IV fluids and a cocktail of medicines, for 8 days.  At this point, every day I survive is a blessing.  I need surgery to repair the fractures in my pelvis and hips and to remove the mass in my colon, but this cannot be done until I am healthy enough to have anesthesia.  The vets are trying to partially dissolve the calcified mass in my colon thru enemas and other means, so that I can eat and potty normally and gain some weight, which will hopefully help me become strong enough for surgery.

The police are investigating my case.  If you have any information that might help, please notify HPD.  I hope they find the person that did these horrible things to me.

If you can help with my HUGE vet bills, please make a tax-deductible donation to Red Collar Rescue!  My ICU costs are over $1000 per day, and I still have orthopedic surgery ahead of me, which will be at least another $5000.  These high costs are a real hardship, but RCR is committed to be there with me each step of the way, and they need your assistance.   Donations can be made by clicking the DONATE NOW button, or by mailing a check to Red Collar Rescue, 945 McKinney Street #424, Houston, TX  77002.

I have wonderful people taking care of me, and I know so many more are praying for me and sending positive thoughts.   I am tired and beaten, but I am not giving up.  I am hoping that maybe one of you reading my story will want to foster and/or adopt me when I am healthy enough to leave the vet clinic....how is that for positive thinking!

With Love and Gratitude!
Sawyer

SAWYER UPDATE: After consulting with numerous specialists, everyone agrees it is time for Sawyer to have surgery to remove the calcified mass from his colon. He cannot get better while this huge rock is obstructing his ability to potty and causing damage to his colon. We tried to dissolve the mass by less evasive means, but they have not worked. A noted surgeon has been called in and will be performing the surgery on Sawyer tonight between 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm. The risky part of colon surgery is the after-care due to bacteria present in the colon that can cause an internal infection. Sawyer will continue in Critical Care for several more days after the surgery.
Once thru this HUGE hurdle, he will be able to gain weight, potty normally, and feel much better. At that point he should be strong enough for orthopedic surgery to his pelvis and hips.
We are so grateful for the outpouring of thoughts, prayers and support for Sawyer, and ask you to continue through his next phase of recovery. Thank you!

Update 04/26: We are consulting with doctors near and far to determine the best course of action for Sawyer. The enemas are not working. The mass has broken up into several pieces, but they are still too large to pass normally. Surgery is risky because he is so under-weight, but may be his only option. He is eating, and the medical staff is doing all they can to keep him comfortable. We hope to know more soon. He needs a little miracle, and lots of prayers.

A huge Thank You to everyone who has helped with his medical costs so far. This is hitting us hard, but we are not giving up. Please share his story.

Upate 04/23:  Sawyer is still in the ICU, as a team of doctors continue to work on removing the mass in his colon.  Surgery may be the only option left.  We are holding our breath, hoping with all our might for some good news for this sweet boy.    Please keep him in your prayers.

Meanwhile, the police are looking for the person who did this to him.
