Summer is just around the corner. For some parents, summer is an exciting time. They're eager to go on their annual family vacations while spending extra time with their children. For other parents, summer is nothing more than a reminder of how little they're working with.
Elissa Strauss of Slate.com writes about the realities parents in New York City experience trying to provide for their children during the summer, "...with day camp costing, on average, $271 a week,... In a city where 1 in 3 children live in poverty (the rate is 1 in 5 nationwide), going to camp is, for many children, just another luxury their parents can't afford. You can read more here.
Summer is and should be an opportunity for parents to expose their children to the beautiful experiences our world and city has to offer.
Real Brown Girls (RBG) began in 2014 curating experiences for networking and professional development for women of color. Recognizing the need to reach back, RBG created an after-school curriculum focused on leadership, communication, and entrepreneurship.
RBG began working with a select set of girls in Brooklyn, NY, at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. Girls in the after school program and within the extended RBG network ought to experience summer the way summer should be experienced, with amazing, educational, fun, enriching, and exploratory experiences.
Proceeds will go to the scholarships won by our RBG Scholarship winners. We've created a scholarship application that includes, an essay, one teacher and one community member recommendation, grades and attendance records. All submitted applications will be reviewed and graded against a student voted rubric by a separate volunteer team, comprised of educators, principals, and social workers.
The application is due March 16th. We hope to have all funds raised before then, so we can accurately assess how many scholarships we can award. With the average program costing $271 a week, at 8 weeks, the average scholarship will cost $2,168 to cover the full cost of the program per winner.
Any remaining balance of donations will be set aside for 2019 scholarships. All organizational donations and proof of scholarship recipients will be sent to campaign donors after the winners have been selected by April 16th.
We appreciate you for joining us in supporting our girls, "we gon' be alright." Special thanks to our fundraising and community partners: PrettiPassionate, BK Girls Night Out, and Brooklyn Buttah
