Puerto Rico and its people have been struggling for over six months since Category 5 Hurricane Maria went across the island on September 2017. Everywhere you go there are reminders of the destruction that Maria left behind: traffic lights that don't work, debris, houses without a roof and constant blackouts are part of our daily living. To this day, thousands continue to live without power and/or water. Many have unwittingly left the island because of the precarious situation the found themselves in. The death toll caused by the storm and the subsequent problems it caused like for example lack of proper health care, food, water and medicine is still unknown. The rise of suicides has been well documented. 80 percent of the crop value in Puerto Rico has been wiped out. There is so much that still needs to be done.
Puerto Rican pianist-composer Brenda Hopkins Miranda has put together "Puentes for Puerto Rico" as a way to contribute through music to the ongoing recovery efforts. Brenda and nine of the most respected, recognized and creative artists active in the Puerto Rican music scene today: Tito Auger, Lizbeth Román, Fofe Abreu, Cheryl Rivera, Javier “Vivanativa” Gómez, Ana del Rocío Gómez, Eduardo Alegría, Jeanne’ d’Arc Casas and Emily Gómez will perform two benefit concerts at the Teatro Tapia on June 2 and 3 of this year.
People in and outside of Puerto Rico will have the option to attend to these concerts for free or to donate whatever they can to help Puerto Rico's recovery. 100% of the proceeds generated by these concerts and this YouCaring platform will go to the Hispanic Fund and other organizations that are working directly with the people that need it most.
The "Puentes for Puerto Rico" effort is being supported by the award-winning composer, lyricist, and performer Lin Manuel Miranda and his father Luis, the San Juan Mayor’s Office, José Morales from La Respuesta Santurce, 71 Associates, ASCAP and PRTicket. This is your opportunity to help no matter where you are.
