The Story

As a small business, The Heron has always been ready, willing & able to help out whenever we can.  During our winter hiatus this year, we have been presented with a unique opportunity to bring our entire culinary team to Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua to volunteer our time cooking at an orphanage, a feed center,  as well providing a community meal for the village of up to 800 people. This opportunity came about through a conversation with one of our customers, Stuart Hersch, who routinely flies missions to impoverished communities bringing much needed medical supplies & food.  In turn, Stu put us in touch with Dustin Holliday, who along with his wife Lisa, have made it their life's mission to help the people of Nicaragua improve their lives – especially the children living at the Casa Bernabe Puerto Cabeza orphanage.

There are currently 140 children from newborn to 21 years old living at the orphanage because they have been placed by government services, their family is too poor to care for them, they are abandoned or abused, one or both of their parents have died, or they are seeking an educational opportunity.  Nicaragua is a third world country and the second poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere (next to Haiti). Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua is on the east coast of Nicaragua. All operations and lodging are on the Verbo Church property which also houses the Casa Bernabe Orphanage.

Please consider a donation - any amount will help defray the costs for our 7 person team.

The money will be used towards flight, supplies & food.   Our team will be traveling from NY to Managua where we will then board a Cessna Aircraft & head to Puerto Cabezas.  From there we will be sourcing & purchasing ingredients as well as building a special rotisserie for the pig roast.   We will be working at the local feeding center, preparing a special Fried Chicken meal for the children at the orphanage & their staff, finally - culminating in a Pig Roast for the community of up to 800 people ! (thats a lot of PIG!!)   We will also be donating any money that may be left over directly to the orphanage.

In return for you generosity we will be hosting a cocktail party upon our return in The Emerald Ballroom as a way to say Thank You!!

Your support would be so very appreciated & our hope is that we can make this our annual mission.

finally have a few minutes to post here on YouCaring (hopefully won't get kicked off before I finish this post)

our experience so far has been incredibly eye-opening & humbling . yesterday we spent the day visiting the farm (more on that later), serving food at the feed center & then delivering the leftovers to the 'dump' where families from the nearby Caminante community walk 45 minutes - many of the children in their bare feet - to shift through the trash for food, provisions, etc... the conditions are hazardous - not only are the roads treacherous, but the dump itself has tons of medical waste - needles, vials which make them prone to disease.

last night we began brining the chickens for our meal at the orphanage today & are getting ready to leave to go build the pits for our pig roast at the feed center tomorrow - we actually added on a 6th pig

Again, all of your SUPPORT has been so greatly appreciated. please know that through your donations we have been able support the local community in ways we never even imagined..

With Gratitude

We have arrived safely in Managua (its HOT here) & en route to Puerto Cabazas via a very small plane where we will be getting the lay of the land, as well as seeing where we are sourcing all of our food from & getting a tour of the feeding center!

Having a hard time uploading any photos but will try again this evening..

Monday March 20th ...

this is it!  we are leaving tonight for Nicaragua.

We had a great team Heron meeting on Friday outlining all our targets including serving at the feeding center, preparing dinner at the Verbo Orphanage, pig roast for the Caminante Community  which is now up to 4 - 200 pound pigs that we will need to prep, roast & serve!  We also received a more thorough understanding of the logistical coordination, safety & security measures & medical support that will be available to us thanks to Verbo/OpEndev.

We will be serving the poorest in Central America & our hope is that our ministry of 'presence' alone will be uplifting to the orphans & the community.

We will be posting photos & updates as our journey unfolds... oh & there is still time to donate :)

With gratitude
