For the past six years, the award-winning youth-led news program POPPYN has created media that highlights the efforts, concerns, creativity and brilliance of youth in Philadelphia. Now approaching its 25th episode, POPPYN is eager to build on a cross-cultural media project with youth organizations in South Africa, a country with a rich historical legacy of youth organizing and leadership. Through this project, young people will work collaboratively to create experimental, narrative and journalistic media that promotes youth power, social change, and an increased sense of global awareness and connectedness across the African diaspora.
In April 2018, representatives of POPPYN from Philly will partner with nonprofit I Am, We Are and the Bafokeng Youth Center, two pillar youth organizations in the heart of Royal Bafokeng Nation, South Africa to complete the production of several short films that youth across both cities began in the fall of 2017. These short films will screen at showcases in their respective communities, beginning in South Africa in April. Additionally, POPPYN will visit two youth media programs in Johannesburg and the Apartheid Museum to learn about the legacy of youth organizing in South Africa. During this trip, POPPYN producers will have opportunities to share and discuss their own efforts to uplift youth power and advocacy in Philadelphia. Throughout this trip, the POPPYN team will document their experiences and personal reflections. This footage -- along with the collaborative short films-- will become POPPYN’s 25th episode. We hope this experience and resulting episode will spark curiosity and a deepened understanding and appreciation for global connectedness and youth power across organizations, borders and the African Diaspora.

POPPYN (Presenting Our Perspective On Philly Youth News) is an award-winning youth media program based in Philadelphia at the University Community Collaborative. POPPYN derived from the desire to illustrate nuanced portrayals of creative young people who are advocates and innovators in their communities. Since its founding in 2011, POPPYN has produced twenty-four episodes exploring topics of concern to youth including education, youth homelessness, the foster care system, and mental health. Throughout the year, high school students collaborate with college students to produce short news segments and episodes that air on public access television and YouTube. The media produced by POPPYN has screened at hearings for city officials, countless classrooms throughout Philadelphia and beyond, and festivals and conferences across the US.
