Oscar has been accepted into the Clinical Trial for Paralyzed Dogs at Iowa State University.
He will be travelling with his mom to Ames, Iowa for four weeklong hospital stays over the course of 6 months starting in September. This is Phase 2 of the trial. Phase 1 took place in England in late 2012, and some of the paralyzed dogs in the trial regained their ability to walk. If Oscar is in the test group, he will receive the treatment as well as extensive physical therapy. If he's in the control group, he'll only receive the physical therapy at first, but he will then return after 6 months for the treatment. Either way, he will receive the treatment and hopefully WALK AGAIN!! We all know how happy Oscar is and will be no matter what the outcome, but if there's any chance our incredible boy can get back on all four feet we will give him the opportunity he deserves. The ultimate goal of the trial is to reverse types of human, as well as canine, paralysis, so we are very proud to be a part of it.
The cost of the treatment is a nominal $100; the bigger concerns are travel and hotel expenses. We've found the least expensive pet-friendly motel in the area and calculated the cost of a rental car, gas, tolls, etc. for four weeks of lodging and round trip travel, and it comes to nearly $5500. We've started this fundraiser to help raise money towards these costs. Oscar has many friends here with huuuuge hearts, but please, don't give money you can't afford. We promise that no matter what, Oscar will get to Ames and get his chance!!
