The Story

Oscar has been accepted into the Clinical Trial for Paralyzed Dogs at Iowa State University.

He will be travelling with his mom to Ames, Iowa for four weeklong hospital stays over the course of 6 months starting in September. This is Phase 2 of the trial. Phase 1 took place in England in late 2012, and some of the paralyzed dogs in the trial regained their ability to walk. If Oscar is in the test group, he will receive the treatment as well as extensive physical therapy. If he's in the control group, he'll only receive the physical therapy at first, but he will then return after 6 months for the treatment. Either way, he will receive the treatment and hopefully WALK AGAIN!! We all know how happy Oscar is and will be no matter what the outcome, but if there's any chance our incredible boy can get back on all four feet we will give him the opportunity he deserves. The ultimate goal of the trial is to reverse types of human, as well as canine, paralysis, so we are very proud to be a part of it.

The cost of the treatment is a nominal $100; the bigger concerns are travel and hotel expenses. We've found the least expensive pet-friendly motel in the area and calculated the cost of a rental car, gas, tolls, etc. for four weeks of lodging and round trip travel, and it comes to nearly $5500. We've started this fundraiser to help raise money towards these costs. Oscar has many friends here with huuuuge hearts, but please, don't give money you can't afford. We promise that no matter what, Oscar will get to Ames and get his chance!! There's also an Amazon wish list of things Oscar's mom will need for travelling, living in the motel, and documenting their trip:  Click Here for Oscar's Wish List

Phase 1 has an amazing video of a paralyzed dachshund walking again:

You can watch Oscar on KCCI news in Iowa here at this link!  You can see the Drs and where he and the other pups have their treatments :) THANK YOU for making this possible for him, and please tell others about the trial so more dogs can possibly be helped!

We made it to Iowa safe and sound!  Oscar is as of this update in day two of his treatment.  Please check out his Facebook page for the most recent updates. I have begun to collect his trip photos on Flickr. I have video clips that will be used later too.

THANK YOU is not enough to say how we feel about the help you have given Oscar. He liked the trip out and also did a lot of sleeping, he is the best little traveler. He has settled in nicely with his things around him. I can tell he hopes to see Poppa and Tiki and his kitty family when we get out of the car but he also really likes his Drs at the vet center.

We will be back here in October December and then March. Hopefully by March he really will be marching on his paws. Even if not he is a happy guy scooting around in his drag bag and wheels. His drag bag has impressed a few people here and hopefully this will raise awareness of the things available to help special needs pets.

I'm going to go pick him up soon and I just wanted to send an update and say we are full of hope for all dogs involved and for what this means for people too in the future. Certain spinal injuries will be a thing of the past one day I just know it! Oscar is proud to be a small furry part of this journey of hope for everyone.

HUGS TO ALL from Oscar and his Momma!
Love from Ames Iowa!

Oscar's story: He was abandoned dragging himself on the Lower East Side on Delancey Street and picked up by animal services. Oscar was put on dog deathrow but thankfully rescued in time by NY Pet-i-Care. We adopted him from them. We are so thankful to them and to the facebook page Urgent Death Row Dogs.

Oscar's Page on Urgent Part 2:

Oscar has a great time zooming in his wheelchair and drag bag and we hope one day soon he'll be running on his own four paws!
