The Story

Update: Last week Leo and I went to Lakeshore Veterinary Clinic in Sarnia for some neurological testing. On top of regular veterinary services they do rehab for dogs! Leo showed some great signs for the possibility of future mobility with the help of physio and other therapies. He has a lot of muscle atrophy and his back paws are over-flexed. At this point he is unable to position them properly for any type of standing or walking. The vet suggested ankle braces to help reposition them and get the muscles working properly again. She also suggested a 'Help Em Up Harness'. I have posted both fb pages for these items on Love for Leo's page. I have already ordered the harness and am looking into the braces. Leo's first physio appt is tomorrow. I have decided to open anew fundraiser to help cover costs for the braces, harness, and treatments as it will be all pretty expensive. The new fundraiser is called 'Love for Leo - Let's Help Leo Walk Again"! It is still through but a new link. Thanks so much to all of Leo's followers and friends. - Love from Jamie and Leo

Leo is a paraplegic rescue dog from Thailand. He was found on a beach, dragging himself around, with terrible wounds on his thighs and legs. He was malnourished at the time and covered in ticks. A compassionate young traveller decided to take action and help him. She managed to get him veterinary care in Thailand, but was unable to find a rescue group there that would take him in so she raised money to get him to Canada and find him a safe/loving home.

Leo arrived in Canada this October and I have been fostering him while he recovers and adjusts. I may be looking at adoption but finances are a difficulty for me. Leo has alot of special needs due to his paralysis. At the moment he is being treated for a severe bladder infection and bladder stones. His bladder needs to be expressed regularly and he needs to wear diapers because of his bladder leakage. It is uncertain at this point whether this will be a lifetime problem.

Leo may end up needing surgery and the cost alone of his prescriptions, special diet needs, and diapers is beyond what I can afford. I have alot of love and time for Leo but I need help with the expenses. At the moment there isn't a rescue organization covering these costs so we have set up this online fundraiser. Note: For those interested, Leo's vet care is being provided by Rapids Veterinary Clinic in Sarnia, ON.

Any donations to help with Leo's medical/special needs costs are greatly appreciated. Thank you to all who have been following Leo's story and to those who have helped with donations up to this point. He is such a happy and friendly dog and he is making progress in his health everyday :)

Hello Friends! Just wanted to let you all know that I had my neutering done last week. I'm recovering very well from the surgery. The vet was actually amazed at how quick I came too and bounced back. I've been resting a lot though and staying inside warm and cuddled up. As for the bladder infection, the results from my bladder culture came back and it turns out I have a type of infection called proteus mirabilis. It is a nasty infection that is resistant to most antibiotics. That is why the antibiotics I was taking didn't solve the problem. Now I'm trying a new drug. I got a shot yesterday and go back next week for another one. Hopefully that will help. My doctors have been so good! I also appreciate all the love and support you have shown me. Hope you are all enjoying your new year so far. - Love from Leo

There have been some people asking about Leo's adoption status. I'm looking into adopting him myself but we are waiting until he is neutered and there is more information about his longterm health/care. I also want to see how he adjusts to weather here in the winter. It may be very difficult for him especially for walks in the wheelchair. I want to make sure it is a good fit for him so if his adoption status changes, I will let you know. Thanks again for your interest and support. - Love from Leo

Many have been asking whether there is anything we still need and if they can still make donations. It is still taking time to assess my helath and longterm needs/care. We may re-open the fundraiser in future but in the meantime, if you want to help you can always donate to your local shelters and rescues. There are lots of others out there who need homes and/or support. Thanks again so much. Will keep you posted. Check out some of my new pics. I went to the Sarnia District Humane Society on the weekend and met Santa! I also some other recent ones with my foster momma and on my new home. - Love to all from Leo

Wanted to let you all know that I went to the vet yesterday to have another urine analysis and ultrasound done. The good news is that the bladder stones and crystals are gone! However, I still have an infection in my bladder and the red blood cells are higher than they should be. I have to stay on my medication for another month to see if there is anymore improvement. At that time, the vet will take a culture of my urine and do another analysis to find out more about what's going on. It might be a case where I will always struggle with a bladder infection and therefore have to remain on the meds for life. We won't know until January 7th. I'm also scheduled then to be neutered. That will be a good thing though because I get pretty excitable at times and even though I don't feel them, my nuts get dragged a lot when I'm scooting around in the house. I don't stay in my wheelchair in the house because I can't lay down or relax in it. The floor is very smooth though so I'm not getting scraped at all and my previous cuts are healing really well. I actually feel really good and I'm enjoying all the love I get wheeling around town. Looking forward as well to Christmas because I'm going to Ottawa for a visit. I can't wait to see some of my old friends, like Meagan and her Mom and Stephanie, Pat and the rest of their gang! Thanks again for all the love and support everyone.

There has been an outpouring of love and support for Leo. Many people who have heard about his story and/or donated to help him are interested in keeping in contact and I have received many friend requests on facebook. I decided instead of adding people to my personal facebook page, I would create a community page for him. To keep in contact, please like his new fb page called "Love for Leo". There is also a fb page called "Help Save Leo" which has been posting on his progress. Thanks again for all the love and support! Love from Leo :)

Leo experienced snow for the first time yesterday. Just a dusting of snow but I don't think he likes the cold too much. His jacket keeps him warm at least, as do the walks. As for his bladder infection, the prescription seems to be helping. He doesn't have blood in his urine anymore and it seems to be getting clearer with less ammonia to it. There has been some problems with our diaper system... Leo has decided to start eating them, which gave me a scare. He is fine though and I think I've come up with a design for his cover wraps that won't allow him to eat the diapers.

We will go for another urine test and ultra sound next week to check on the bladder stones and renew his presciption. Thank you so much for all the kind words and donations/shares. It is much appreciated and really helps.
